Your work canteen meal today

I'm starting this thread for those of us who work in offices (or elsewhere) to post about what they've had at their work canteen.

I'm still unsure, after fifteen months here, whether some of the dishes at work are simply Swiss or just weird.

Our work canteen used to occasionally excel, but these days this has pretty much vanished. I have so little faith that I head for the cheapest menu option (CHF5 for a main meal and salad or orange juice) and eat it as quickly as I can . . . and I'm someone who loves food. I'm a bit stuck for choice as I work at a business park. Maybe I'll switch to packed lunches soon.

So let me start . . .

Yesterday I had a beefburger with feta crumbled on top, accompanied by rice and courgettes. Quite strange I thought as I chomped my way through it.

Today's CHF7.50 menu was actually a fairly decent meal of lamb, ratatouille and gratin dauphinoise.

Well, I have to agree, we have a restaurant with a high variety of options, but on average pay twice what you do for the daily specials, yet it is still hard to spot any local dishes... I suppose at the end of the day, if you like it, and it's good value, then crack on. I'm heading back into vegetarianism again as I never did like Pork or lamb, and beef and fish are just so expensive on the menu. Salads and non meat products feature well on the menu and in the shops so it wont be hard to adjust back again.

Do they print out the menus by any chance? Might be the translation which makes it look weird you know. We always have a French and an English version of what's in the food machine. Some are meals to be stuck into the microwave before consumption.

But sometimes, that translated menu page, from French into English is a pure puzzle. The funniest thing is that I need to kind of back translate from the English version into French for the English speakers. Very amusing and a bit off topic too. sorry. But the food is basically a big cultural shock, I mean mixture. Nobody can tell what it is, exactly.

Reminds me of one of the meals I was served at the hospital here in Basel.

It had chicken, veggies and spätzle... if it had been rice rather than spätzle I would have called it "chicken fried rice".

I asked the nurse what it was, she looked at it, looked at me and shrugged.

It was good, just kinda maybe a hodgepodge of cooking ideas thrown into one pan.

I do have a menu in Swiss German and I will be happy to add that as a tasty accompaniment to future posts.

It's not the translation that makes it seem weird though. It's the food on the plate. I mean, beefburger with feta, with rice and courgettes?!?!?!

I've heard of a Greek salad being served at the university canteen containing chunks of Emmenthaler cheese... which strikes me as a little unfortunate.

Sounds like something the English would come up with, and yep I'm English

Nothing worse than finding a caterpillar in your salad...except half a caterpillar that is...

No I gave it back and got a sandwich in exchange. It was quite small but still not what I want to find in my salad.

Re: Your work canteen meal today

Todays canteen grub was something with Pasta spirals, an unenjoyable thin gravy-like sour sauce, and some meat, I could not identify for sure, but i think it was pork.
It was on a customers site, so hopefully, I can get it refunded, or it was CHF 19.90 wasted for one of the worst meals, i ever experienced.

Doc.

Re: Your work canteen meal today

The burger and feta thing works. I make my own burger (no bun) with 50% beef, 50% veal, torn pieces of baby spinach, crumbled feta, and turmeric, cumin, garlic, salt and chili sauce. Its very good by itself or with a bit of a stir fry next to it - healthy too!

Re: Your work canteen meal today

Today we a good choice of swiss meals. Hackbraten with polenta, Veggie gratin or Bratwurst and chips.

The menu is ok, but not as good as others in the city (Novartis (SV Service) for example).

The rest of the week looks ok, but not a great week overall:

Re: Your work canteen meal today

You chaps should be grateful that you even get a menu.

I have to face a like-it-or-lump-it daily list that, to be fair, is pretty good most of the time, except when it's spaghetti or spaetzli, when I'm buggered.

Thank goodness for tinned tuna and rice crackers!

Re: Your work canteen meal today

Today I had fish with a side of broccoli cooked in butter and white rice with bits of wild rice. And a green salad with french dressing. I would have to say that the lunches in the cafeteria are pretty good for the most part, with the exception of spätzle... still can't quite get used to the doughy little bits...

Oh, and there was free dessert, which was probably a one-time thing for the holidays. There were 6 different bowls of pudding-like mixtures. I suppose one was mango sauce, one was panna cotta with a red jelly sauce on top, one was chocolate pudding, two looked like tiramisu, and one was caramel flan.

I can't understand the menu because it's all written in German, but they lay out the dishes for you to look at when you enter, so I just pick whatever looks most appetizing.

Did they serve you a Beef Burger sandwich or just a Beef Burger?.
Just the burger . . . and not even a good burger. But then I can't expect much for CHF5 when a BK meal costs CHF15 . . . My main puzzle is with the combination of food on the plate: It defies my culinary sensibilities.

Re: Your work canteen meal today

My canteen stinks.

Every day it's either fish, chips and mushy peas with parsley sauce; Roast beef, Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes, carrots, broccoli and onion gravy; or steak and kidney pudding with mashed potato, peas and gravy.

And it's always followed by jam roly-poly or bakewell tart - invariably with thick custard.

What I wouldn't give for a scabby sandwich with compulsory gherkin.
