Looking for Harissa / Dietikon/Baden/Zurich

Could someone please tell me where I can buy harissa? If you suggest your local Coop / Migros (which I doubt) please say in which one exactly.

I have realised that supermarkets here are the worst. Unless ones goes to the Coop in Sihl City, the bigger the supermarket, the more of the same they have. I discovered this when I took the bus to Silbern (Dietikon) yesterday and had a look in the Coop there. Great produce section but the rest... OMG... what a sad collection. A whole aisle of some cheap white noodle on special offer. A whole AISLE!! Think about that!! and that wasn't the only stupid product shown like that.

Anyway, Harissa is the product of the day. Hope someone can help

Thanks, I may have to go back there, although would prefer to go to the one at the Bahnhof in Baden, then I won't start tutting at the layout of the place and hopefully they will have it...

Re: Looking for Harissa / Dietikon/Baden/Zurich

I have seen it in the Turkish shops, also seen it in the big coops - most big coops now have quite a good section for foods around the world, the big coops have a good selection of Turkish, Moroccan type ingredients these days, much better than it was 4 years ago - so you will definitely see harissa paste in this area, or if all else fails try globus and Jelmoli food halls

any decent sized coop should have it. I am not sure of the smaller ones though at the train stations. The big coop at Oerlikon and Sihl City and Dietlikon would have it

the liquid Harissa is availabe in most decent supermarket and good grocery shops, incl Coop and Migros and Marinello. The powder-form Harissa (from www.merlasco.com / Theben Import + Export, Langnau am Albis) only in some specialized shops.

Re: Looking for Harissa / Dietikon/Baden/Zurich

The Meierhofplatz (8049) Co-op has it in a tube with the other ethnic ingredients.

I really think it is not as spicy as harissa I have bought in the past. Am I crazy, or is this a Swiss thing?

I know this has been true of other products I've tried here. For example, here the "Thai Kitchen" curry pastes are clearly a different formula than they sell in the US, less spicy, saltier, and sweeter.

The Harissa you bought was manufactured in Tunisia (or under licence in Marseille or Amsterdam) ans so is NOT a "Swiss thing" ! And I from experience can say that those from Marseille and Amsterdam do NOT differ from the Tunisian ones.

The Thai Kitchen products you get in Continental Europe usually are produced in the Netherlands. I don't know about those in the USA, but suppose it is from Mexico. The manufacturers in the Netherlands have to cater for both Thais and Indonesians within their country. So, no, in that case I suppose that the Mexicans "are different".

If you can't find Harissa in your local Coop - you can maybe order it mail?

Re: Looking for Harissa / Dietikon/Baden/Zurich

I'm in Wettingen and found it today in the Migros near the EW bus stop (5 mins from Baden Bahnhof Ost - lines 1, 3, 6, or 7). The only kind they had was a paste called "Le Phare du Cap Bon De Tunisie." Since they have it there, I would assume they would have it in the Bahnhof Migros as well. Check beside the Thai products - I found mine near the coconut milk. Good Luck!

Re: Looking for Harissa / Dietikon/Baden/Zurich

Interesting. I've found two harissas here, the standard "Cap bon" brand at Globus Bellevue, and I tried my luck with another one I found there, a Moroccan one (Bleh, that one was spicy ketchup). I would recommend making your own but I have never seen the right peppers needed to make a good harissa (air dried, large, spicy!)
But if I may point you to an article I wrote recently on another kind of "harissa", it may inspire you to get your cuisinart out! Good luck!
