Buckfast - the scourge of the Scots

Brings back fond memories, I had no idea a bottle had so much caffeine! http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/04/wo...4scotland.html

"Buckfast is considered a regional favorite in Coatbridge. Perhaps it is its special caffeine-and-sweet-wine recipe, which allows overly enthusiastic consumers to be tipsy and bouncy at the same time. Perhaps it is its array of snappy nicknames, including “Wreck the Hoose Juice” — hoose being a Scottish pronunciation of house — or its exotic provenance as the product of wine-making Benedictine monks at an abbey in England"

Re: Buckfast - the scourge of the Scots

How can you have any memories, never mind fond, drinking buckfast ?

I just love how it says on the bottle that "tonic" does not imply it has medicinal properties

Those would be the memories that come flooding back when your sober friend describes the previous nights shenanigans.

Good old Buckie. You've served me well. Praise the B!

Re: Buckfast - the scourge of the Scots

I've never drank it myself, sounds pretty disgusting!

From the same article:

Quote:
....And the police in the depressed industrial district of Strathclyde recently told a BBC program that the drink had been mentioned in 5,638 crime reports between 2006 and 2009 (the bottle was used as a weapon in 114 of them).

Re: Buckfast - the scourge of the Scots

I remember a story from quite a few years ago about a delegation of Scottish councillors visiting the Benedictine monks to beg them to halt production of the socially damaging beverage. Clearly though, keeping the residents of Strathclyde in a loopy haze is God's work.
