American Food

Are there any American restaurants in Zurich? I dont mean hamburgers and hotdogs but some good tex mex or southern food. Pulled pork, ribs, cornbread, burritos, hot sandwhiches. Im tired of having to eat kebaps and cold sandwhiches when im in a rush.

Also some bohemian places would be good.. swiss food doesnt have enough personality for me.

Re: American Food

In a word - no. It requires too many rare, hard-to-source ingredients, like brown sugar and jalapeno peppers.

A few more or less dodgy Tex-Mex places discussed here:

Re: American Food

there is a place called New York Food, on Stampfenbachstrasse near Central. I pass it often, doesn't look great and I've never been in. However it's apparently American. Maybe go past and see?

Re: American Food

There's the Stars and Stripes American Bar and Restaurant located in Brütten (ZH). It's not really American, just "American Style" but it's not bad.

They are affiliated with Tres Amigos Mexican Bar and Restaurant, which again isn't really Mexican, just "Mexican Style" but typical of all TexMex restaurants in Switzerland, far below par.

Speaking of W NY, any idea where a person might find Frank's in Switzerland? (or a good recipe to try to replicate it??)

Do you mean hot sauce? If so, I think I might have seen it at the Jelmoli grocery on Bahnhofstrasse.

I assume there is a critical mass of Americans on the german side of the border. Any info on American restaurants there? An NY style deli would be great.

Re: American Food

This is the recipe I use to make my own BBQ sauce here, all of the ingredients except brown sugar are easy to find, I simply use some molasses and "roh" sugar in it's place.

It does quite well for pulled pork (makes A LOT of sauce) as well as on ribs over the summer.

I know, it's not quite the same as going out to a BBQ place and getting brunswick stew to start, fried okra and stewed greens on the side and some delicious banana pudding or keylime pie to end things off but hey, something to look forward to when visiting folks "back home."

Re: American Food

My experience is you need to cook your own foods to find the American or Tex-Mex stuff. You CAN find most of the ingredients, but it takes some searching. We have a Mexican market in Zurich that has almost everything that you would need. And for typical 'American' dishes, one just needs to find the stores that sell the right ingredients.

Typically, I shop at 6-7 stores for staples and specialty items. Coop/Migros/Denner/Marinello for day to day stuff. El Maiz for Mexican, and there are at least 10 Asian/South Asian stores in my neighborhood. Gone are the days of going to Carrefour for most everything, but that is ok. I can take my bike and get to almost everything in a few minutes in Kreis 4-5.

Re: American Food

I am sure that whatever food you will find here in restaurant it won't taste the same as original food from your country. Interestingly, whenever I shop in Lidl, I always pick up stuff form shelves labelled "MCENNEDY American Way". It seems like South African taste and standards are similar when it comes to e.g. biscuits, bread (slice of bread size) just to name a few. Also I prefer buying large 2l bottle of sodas instead of minature ones. Amazingly I couldn't find Valentine's Day card for my better half in local shops. It seems like this tradition doe not have strong roots here.

Re: American Food

It is not possible to get American food in restaurants here, even a simple burger or BLT is outside the grasp of Swiss connoisseurs.

It's because of those Swiss cows. It's too bad those cows were bred for milking, not burgering.

We have this whole sensibility of an outdoor grilled burger out in the frontiers. The taste of flame licked patties. I agree that this is lost on the Swiss.

There is NO Valentine's Day tradition here. The Valentine's Day thing only was brought round here by the florists for business reasons, but is perceived by most people as something strange and "outlandish"

I personally detest bottles of whatever of more than one liter. One liter is alright but more is not. The stuff starts to smell like cat's **** if you have it around for a while.

Many pubs like the Shamrock or the St. Joseph have BLT. Burgers are NOT regarded as something for "connoisseurs" but as "sub-class nourishment" !
