| | | Any experience in counting calories?
'morning!
I have to sit down and think about how to get rid of those 4 kilos I really want to lose.
I looked I my food intake and I think it is not bad. I eat well and normal size. But I realised I eat too much cheese. I am good on the sugar, I don't eat really much (no desert...) But time to time, I have this chocolat rush!
I try to not eat to salty and healthy food.
I never counted calories before. I looked at the calorie number on the packaging and try to make good choices but it stop there.
I began to make some change with my breakfast this morning. I counted all the calories. But I am not sure how to deal with ''non-writed'' calories.
For exemple, I drink coffee. How should I count this? If I prepare a home made pizza?
Someone here can give me some tricks and tips how to deal with food intake?
Nil

the simplest method I've seen is the Weightwatchers one - you're allowed x points per day and you know food y is z points.
Pizza is all of the points for the day and fruit is free - that's what I learned (my ex was fat, sorry, a member )

DON'T DO IT!!!
but ok really if you want o lose this weight and you want to do it for good reasons and not in a silly way (swallowing diet pills )
I suggest this : don't bother counting calories!! it can turn into a bad habit you don't want!!
eat you 3square meals a day! don't snack......if you feel hungry maybe some tomato or drink water!!
cut out all crappy food...and I mean everything no crisps, no ice cream, no sweets of any kind!!
I know that I like to be picky about what I eat not to lose weight ..if anything I should gain some...but just cause I have this whole healthy thing in my head that eating excess food that you don't need because you're not hungry....well to me it's bad for you
I tend to keep my weight pretty much always the same!! just by sticking to these habits!! And if I break them I find it tends to go up!!
hope this helps

Counting calories is rubbish, you will lose track and put yourself under unnecessary stress and you can become a compulsive counter, ruining a meal not only for yourself but other people in your clan, on the other hand eating should be not just a pitstop for re-fueling but a highlight of the day, something to look forward to and enjoy, 4 Kilos Nil. Not worth the bother, 40 yea, 4 neigh.

there are several programs you can use, I like www.fitday.com, that also estimate your home cooked foods. for pizza, you get 77 options like pizza, cheese, thin crust; pizza, meat and vegetables, thick crust etc. and you can choose the portion by either weight, slice etc. Try.

If you're eating a relatively healthy, balanced diet already, start doing more exercise. The combination of the 2 will see you lose weight, without the obsession with calories or crash dieting.

Actually 3 meals a day and no snacking is also not the best way to weight loss. It is reccomended that you have 5 small meals a day in order to keep your metabolism high. However, this really isn't practical for most people so the best thing to do is eat large in the early part of the day and smaller in the evening.
Ideally breakfast is the time to go to town and eat lots because you have a chance to burn off the calories you are taking in and not let it turn to fat. Most people have a large evening meal (and probably a bit late too) meaning that while you sleep your body has nothing to do with the energy you have taken in other than turn it into fat.
On the snacking front, most of us feel the need to 'graze' as it was once put to me. Obviously chocolate and crisps are not the best idea for this so substitute it with fruit and/or vegeatables. And the inevitable will happen when the vending machine feels like it is tapping you on the shoulder and asking you to buy a delicious snack but don't feel bad if you give in. A 100% cut off of the foods you really enjoy will make you a bit miserable and resentful of eating healthily. Just treat yourself every once in a while with something you really want as opposed to something that is convenient. At the end of the day it is true that you need everything in moderation so look at the snack that way too.
Doing all this requires a lifestyle change but it is worth it in the long run and it will become easier once it becomes a habit rather than a chore.
Best of luck with the weight loss
EDIT: Also exercise is the key! Without this it's a little pointless. It doesn't even have to be overly active. A 30-60 minute walk a day will do the job. But it goes without saying that if this turns into a run it can only benefit the cause

Actually for people who have not tried to lose weight before, I find those calorie counters quite useful, as a lot of things can have a surprising number of calories. Like people often assume that fruit is ok to eat in whatever quantities - the reality is though that a few apples, bunch of grapes, some bananas and a handful of raisins can easily add 1000 kcal to your daily food intake. Also a lot of healthy things like nuts or avocado are very high in calories- i'm not saying that one should not eat them, just in moderation.
As for sports, of course one should do them, but the only time I have lost weight by just adding sports and not limiting the food intake was when I was a newly qualified fitness instructor and took all the possible classes I could find - it is usually not reasonable for someone to do about 3 classes per day, every day. And here we have the opposite problem, people tend to over-estimate the calories burned. You see it often, someone does some light jogging, maybe an aerobics class that will burn 300 kcal.. and then awards him/herself with a big protein shake and sandwich..

1. eat slowly (20 minutes into the meal your brain get the info about food)
2. eat only the amount you need which basically means not to the point when u are so full, you cannot take anymore in
3. you need to cut calories down (not drastic from the start of course), the "small steps" method (i.e. stop using 3 sugars instead of 2) was proved to be insufficient, our body adapts to that pretty fast and losing weight will not happen
4. 30 mins of fast walking every day is helpful if you cannot go to some aerobic or gym
5. I would suggest to start and control your weight every day, there are people which will disagree with that but it helped me to maintain my weight pretty well. Basically I was able to know when I needed to eat a bit less or work out more to keep it balanced.
I lost 6 kilogramms this way last year and it pretty much stayed on the "wanted" level since then. Good luck! | | The following 2 users would like to thank Little_Polka for this useful post: | |

Here a few tips if you are serious:
1) When you serve your food; serve it on a side plate as opposed to a large plate so that it looks more.
2) Eat slower; chew the food more before swalling.
3) Drink a large glass of water quarter of an hour before you start eating; this will help your stomach feel fuller and you will probably eat less as a result.
4) Give yourself a food budget (money wise) and don't buy food you really want so that you don't want it but eat it to survive.
5) When you want to eat a snack; DONT; just go and find some stairs to walk up and down (20 times).
6) Do lots of sit ups that hurt the abdominal muscles because this tends to take the craving for food away.
Here I am giving advise and yet am overweight myself at 80kgs at 1.82 metres with a BMI of 24.2 (close to overwieght). http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/bmi-m.htm

I never did a diet in my life, so I just try to find a solution. I know 3-4 kilos are not much, but I can't get rid of them since the pregnancy and I can't stand to stay like that.
Before to come here and being pregnant, I was working a lot and I was very active so it wasn't an issue. Now, with a toddler, it is not easy to go out, move and exercice. |

Im glad you're doing it for yourself and not anyone else :0

1. I listed what I ate every day for a couple of weeks and I lost 2kg two months ago. It made me more conscious of what I ate and chose my food in a more discriminating way. Didn't have to show this list to anyone but it looked ridiculous to myself when I ate too much in the course of a day and evening.
2. I still ate a bit of chocolate, ice-cream, cheese OR cookies every other day - just so I wouldn't feel too deprived.
3. Kept my portions small. I don't eat till I feel full, knowing that I'll feel satiated after 5 or 10 minutes.
4. Snacked on a small handful of raw almonds, a few dried prunes, half a banana or an apple when I felt hunger pangs between lunch and dinner. Homemade mixed veggie soups (without cream) are delicious, healthy and filling.
4. Brisk walking for at least 30-60 minutes each day helped a bit.
Good luck!

When I was younger (and fatter) I lost 3 stone by counting calories. It's easy to snack "mindlessly" and almost not notice you're doing it - I found making a note of what I'd eaten in a day helped. Or put postits on your fridge and cupboards asking if you reeealllly want the biscuit you're about to take. I appreciate that might sound crazy and a little obsessive to some people...it was 3 stone, I was obsessive!!
People have suggested eating slower and drinking water if you feel hungry. This is good advice as you may not be as hungry as you think. Waiting 20 mins after eating to see how you feel is also good. Switching to "diet" versions of your food could help - fat free milk instead of the normal kind, brown bread instead of white, tomato based pasta sauces instead of creamy ones etc....
Good luck |

P.S. Brown bread and wholemeal bread give about the same amount of calories as white bread. The former are just a bit healthier.
