Hi, we're organising a bid party in June. Beer and wine seems quite expensive over here. Any advice where we can get a bargain (while keeping up the quality) ? Would it make sense to drive over to France ?

Yep, if you have France easily accessible, I would definitely pop across. Especially for the same brand beer (ie. imported)

Since you are planning well in advance, you could start buying up in advance too!

It's reasonable to drive to France only if it really is that big. Otherwise for beer I would buy it by the Keg and make an arrangment to buy the wine in a mini vat/barrel or bag o box and spout it into Limonade bottles(which by the way I have alot of) or similiar. OR you could contact Portmouth68 who is an EF'r, who owns a wine shop in Luzern. He might be able to do something for you; especially if it is a big party, and bonus, he speaks english, bloody hell aussy english.

The alcohol will cost nothing compared to the food costs but I am sure if you speak to conflozed who is a chef he can help!!! ....

coop (at least in basel) has a good offer. 24 cans of anker beer for 12 bucks, thats 1.- a litre. but its only drinkable (and after a few of them, its pretty decent...) if served cold, really cold.

I think they have locations in France too. Their prices are ridiculously cheap for excellent wines, I've yet to see a wine priced over 30€ there. There's plenty of good stuff available for around 7€ too, definitely worth the trip.

I bet anyone, that if you showed me a bottle of wine from Denner and I will able to show you a better bottle of wine from an independent retailer whether it be me or Schubi or Movenpick for a similar price.

Last night I happened to miss my train from the Hauptbahnhof to home and to whilst passing the time before the next one, I found myself wandering into the 'Beer and wine shop' located in the shoppville.
How come I never saw that before?
Anyway, I left there with 2 bottles of Sam Smiths Old Tadcaster Brewery Pale Ale, 2 bottles of Duvel (arguably the best beer in the world), 2 bottles of Everard's Tiger and 2 bottles of Theakstones.
Not a bad little haul considering . . . . . I think I might be missing that train a little more often.

I would suggested to check shelves in Lidl and Aldi. Amongst mixed quality drinks you can buy nice quality and reasonably priced alcohol bevarages e.g. wines and Panache. Coke and other cool drinks are sold in large 2l bottles in plastic and they are the same everywhere. Everytime I do my shopping on Friday, I see lots of party animals with trolleys stocking large crates. It saves time travelling across the border.

Denner sell slabs of 24 0.5L cans of Budvar or Urquel Pilsner for 1.20 a can. That is a pretty good deal for good quality beerage.

Of course, if you import from Germany or France, you will remember to declare it at customs - otherwise, if you get caught, it'll suddenly become quite expensive.

Since you are near Lausanne, I recommend Aligro. Its a big store that sells alot to restaurants and they have a large selection of alchohol and food. Its like a Sams club in the US.
I think its been mentioned in other threads if you do a search.

Beer is dirt cheap in Switzerland compared to Australia.
