Frozen Yoghurt. Where in Zurich?

Well I have a hankering for Frozen Yoghurt. It was one of my favourite things in the UK - especially the soft serve type in the little cup. Although full of sugar it has a little of that yoghurty sourness to it and is light and fresh. Where can I find this in Zurich? If I can't get the soft serve I'll take it packaged but the Migros one is only 20% yoghurt and is basically a sorbet. Please help!

Re: Frozen Yoghurt. Where in Zurich?

I used to love this in the US as well but had rarely seen it here, until this past weekend, that is. This place in Uster produces their own ice-cream, frozen yoghurt and sorbet with milk from the dairy farm next serve. It's not soft serve, but it's still very, very good (and I normally don't care for ice-cream). Only open in summer--weekends and evenings--and only in good weather.

Unfortunately, they didn't have the plain yoghurt flavor yesterday, but you can buy single servings or tubs frozen.

Re: Frozen Yoghurt. Where in Zurich?

Sorbetto makes the best ice cream that I have come across - local in Kreis 7.

They also sell in Globus and other stores. See their website.

wow! Your love of frozen yoghurt rivals my own, but clearly you are much more ambitious than me. Good luck!

Re: Frozen Yoghurt. Where in Zurich?

Also saw it in Lucerne this weekend, at Dieci (they also have locations in Zurich and elsewhere). Still not soft serve though, and only two flavors: plain and berry.

I guess you could, but when freezing the yoghurt you should stir it about every 20 to 30 minutes to keep it smooth. The easy solution for a frozen fruit yoghurt is to process already frozen fruit with yoghurt and sugar.

Not quite. The difference being still-frozen vs churn-frozen. If you still-freeze yogurt in your freezer, you will just end up with a block of yogurt ice. The suggestion to stir ever 20-30 minutes will improve the texture.

Churn-freezing yogurt in an ice cream maker results in a soft-serve texture. Coop-city was selling these machines (Krups G VS2 41 Eismaschine) a while ago and we bought one. It has a 1L capacity, so I use two 500g tubs of yogurt for one batch. I use my hand-held blender to liquify the yogurt and then pour it into the machine. Less than 30 minutes later, we have delicious frozen yogurt.

So far I've made apricot, strawberry, and coffee flavors just by using those varieties as purchased from coop/migros (no need to add anything extra!) I also made vanilla frozen yogurt by adding a few packets of vanilla sugar and 1/2 cup of sugar to plain yogurt. It is so refreshing, and way fewer calories than ice cream (which is basically just frozen butter).

Hope that helps, and I really recommend that ice-cream maker. The bowl takes up half our freezer, but I leave it in there all the time anyway because it is so handy to make a batch of fro-yo whenever we want a treat or dessert that is still relatively healthy.

Re: Frozen Yoghurt. Where in Zurich?

As a kid, my mom used to make yogurt popsicles, just by freezing non-fat fruit yogurt in popsicle molds. Totally different texture from "fro-yo", but totally delicious! Can't do that here, though, Swiss freezers don't have shelves/drawers tall enough to hold popsicle molds.

But yeah, churn-freezing sweetened yogurt should produce an excellent product.

Shouldn't matter... you can always buy a yogurt bucket and stand your popsicle molds up inside it to freeze side by side...

I do this regularly, I freeze a small tub of vanilla yogurt for a couple of hours, no longer. Yum!

Re: Frozen Yoghurt. Where in Zurich?

Finally 2012 brought 3 different sources of Frozen Yogurt to Zurich:

The number 1 of these 3 is TYSON'S, located opposite the post office in Zurich Seefeld, Höschgasse 44. It's a combined shop/gallery that sells art, frozen yogurt with a large selection of excellent toppings and fresh fruits, a great combination of American/Swiss hotdogs with imported relishes and mustards, and it's also a video library with a fine selection of movies, many of them independent movies form all over the world.

The number 2 is YOO-MOO, located opposite the Kaufleuten, Pelikanstrasse. Probably this shop was the very first to introduce froyo to Switzerland... Here you have the choice from three different handles/tastes and a large variety of different toppings.

The number 3 is Lollipop, a sweets shop located in the Niederdorf.

For a judgment about the quality of the Frozen Yogurt you will have to visit all three of them - worthwile anyway if you a have a little time to find your best personal source...

Re: Frozen Yoghurt. Where in Zurich?

I have been to Tysons in Hoeschgasse - not as good as some of the NYC shops, but good enough to fulfil an acute craving.

Re: Frozen Yoghurt. Where in Zurich?

Hi, thanks for your comment.
The NYC shops are the worldwide leaders regarding number of flavors and variety of toppings/add-ons - I wouldn't (yet) compare to the elite, although they serve us as a model regarding toppings.
The quality of our froyo is very good and we want to keep it on just one flavor for this year, since this offers the most possibilities for combinations with exotic toppings. We receive much applause for it, and we serve a steadily growing number of patrons. In summer we will have much more fruit - so please come and visit us then. For more specific suggestions for improvements we are very thankful.
