where to buy bottled soda water in ZH?

I know you can get the soda fountains with cartridges etc..., but I only want it for the occasional booze up and not really willing to invest in a machine-thingy that I'd use once in a while.

So where can I get bottled soda water? I've seen Schweppes tonic, bitter lemon et al, so I'd assume they'd have the soda as well, but unless i'm blind I can't really see it anywhere...

Any help will be appreciated

PS, feel free to slate me if this has been asked already, I searched but I couldn't find it...

Erm, is it crucial that it be sodium free a la the states? B/C if not, I would assume your standard mineralwasser mit kohlensaure would suffice?

sodium free not important.. mineralwasser mit kohlensaure (i think) is normal sparkling water, isn't it? soda water is a whole different ball game...

Re: where to buy bottled soda water in ZH?

I always thought soda water, club soda, seltzer and sparkling mineral water were more or less variants of the same beast. Wikipedia (oh master of all knowledge) seems to agree:
Soda water, is water which is carbonated and thus made effervescent by the addition of carbon dioxide gas under pressure. Soda water gets its name from the sodium salts it contains, added as flavoring and acidity regulators often to mimic the taste of natural mineral water.
It is also called seltzer or seltzer water in the US and Canada, a name derived from Selters an der Lahn, a small village in Hesse, Germany, renown for its mineral springs.
Soda water is often drunk plain, mixed with fruit juices, and is used to dilute alcoholic beverages to make cocktails, such as a whisky and soda, or Campari and soda.
and:
Carbonated water, also known as soda water, can be produced in the home by "charging" a refillable seltzer bottle by filling it with water and then adding carbon dioxide. Club soda may be identical to plain carbonated water or it may contain a small amount of table salt, sodium citrate, sodium bicarbonate, potassium bicarbonate, potassium citrate, potassium sulfate, or disodium phosphate, depending on the bottler. These additives are included to emulate the slightly salty taste of homemade soda water. The process can also occur naturally to produce carbonated mineral water, such as in Mihalkovo in the Bulgarian Rhodopes, or MedzitlijaMacedonia.

But maybe tastewise this has to do with how much 'fizz' you like in your drink mixers?

bang on the money, honey, that one. I'm no chemist so I'm not going to argue with anyone on what goes inside soda water (great post, BTW), I just want some soda water because the fizz lasts a lot longer that normal sparkling water's (even Perrier) fizz ever will...

Erm, just about any grocery store carries it; if you're by the carbonated drinks, you should be in the right place. Otherwise look in the next aisle...

I think I know what you are looking for. In the olden days they sold them in large shops, like Globus, in the departments with the cutlery and porcelain. Maybe they still sell them there.

do they? 'cos if they do I must be the blindest man on Earth (which is possible). I scoured every shop I can think of and I can't find any soda water... sparkling water, on the other hand, is a penny a gallon but, as Seeingbee suggested, I need the particular fizz of soda for what I have in mind

Reading the search for soda water, I am prompted to ask where one can
buy Alkalized water here - specially after reading: water4alifetime.com

Ardneham:

The closest thing I've found is the Valser Classic. It still goes flat slightly before club soda, but the bubbles (and taste) are almost the same. You can get it at any grocery store. Perrier isn't bubbly enough for me... although San Pellegrino is sometimes great. Good luck!

After reading this article in the NY Times, I suggest you get a small SIPHON machine with the CO2 capsules.
I think you will be looking long and hard to find club soda in the grocery store.

Schweppervescence. You can't beat it. It's the one with the black label. Here's an identity aid:

But you know what? I think you're right, its natural habitat does not include der Schweiz! Schweppes Soda Water is not listed on www.myshop.ch, nor www.coop.ch, which means that officially it is bottle non grata in Switzerland.

You may have to settle for mineral water, or take a trip across the border to D or F where it is definitely available.

No I didn't mean to state that: In the cutlery / porcelain department they will sell you the machine and the gas cartridge to make your own soda water.

(Which I think was what you wanted on the first posting, before you were distracted onto bottles of mineral water found in every supermarket)

Yep, in my roamings I've not seen Soda Water (as 22 Yards pictured) anyplace. Ginger Ale and Tonic, check, soda water not so much.

Also, after trying my hand at making root beer from extract and mixing it with the normal bottled bubbly water here, I'm going to say that if you're after something along that idea... the taste of the mineral water adversely affects the final product. (I guess I'll have to stick with the 3.50chf per can of root beer from Lolipop for my late summer root beer float party idea.)

Re: where to buy bottled soda water in ZH?

Hi Walter,

just went to "Urbano Bar" at Sihlcity and asked if they have bottled soda water. The guy said they have it but was not able to find any(...).

They wait for delivery. He couldn't even tell me the company they get the stuff from. I will ask next week to show me the bottle.

Also "prodega" and "cash & carry anghern" (Restaurant- and Shopsuppliers) don't have any.

The Kisag Syphon sounds good.

Re: where to buy bottled soda water in ZH?

Thinking about it, as we know that Coop does carry Schweppes products, I wonder if you can get them to specially order in a case for you the next time they're making a stock order?

Speaking of Schweppes, the history movie on their website is pretty interesting.
