Hi all ! I'm new in this forum and will be moving from Luzern to Bern by May. Can anyone recommend good asian grocery stores which specializes in Chinese, Korean or Japanese Kitchen ingredients? Would be great to know if there are also good asian restaurants in Bern? Hope to read from someone soon!

Do you know of any social clubs in Bern that are English-speaking and (miracle) also include Singaporeans?

Ok..maybe I should improve my German and it's not good with me and my husband slipping back to English conversations most of the time because he is tired from work...However, I have not been satisfied with the German courses that I have taken here. I used to have lots of fun and really enjoyed learning it back home.

It's pretty quiet here and I really miss my friends in Singapore very much and was very happy when met up with an old friend yesterday !!)

Are there clubs for mothers learning German together? It would be really great to be able to take my 3-month old baby daughter along

There is also an Asian shop in Breitenrain - about 10mins tram from the main station. Get the number 9 tram to Guisanplatz, get off at Breitenrain and walk back towards Bern and you should see it within about 500 metres on the left hand side.

There is also an English Speaking Club in Bern. Ive never been but a quick Google will give you more info.

My family enjoyed Mishio - it's casual Asian and right on Barenplatz - it's on the second level and has a nice terrace.

Was hoping to find some bubble tea for my daughter, but no luck yet.

There is a good Asian (Europeanised! and reasonable prices) restaurant at Breitenrainplatz, its strong on Thai menus

I'm in St-Imier, Bern Canton, but miles away from the capital, I
cook all types of Asian food and I get my ingredients like dried
spices, packaged foodstuffs and Asian ingredients etc from
Biel/Bienne which is about half hour from Bern. All the shops are
near the main station, you can even find fresh curry leaves!!!!

There's a shop in the arcade near the Markthalle on Bubenbergplatz (click here its behind the white van) that sells Asian groceries. It's small but at least its in the city.

Bern is GREAT !! The folks here are very cultured, polite and helpful! I went to the Post Office earlier to collect a parcel and 2 people have offered to help me stuff the parcel into my grocery trolley. My family and I have just settled here last week. We have been busy exploring the area, doing compulsory grocery shopping at Coop, Migros and Aldi but have also tried out eating at some places e.g. Mishio (lucia2, thank you so much for the recommendation!). We had satay hot pot, tempura shrimps and udon noodle soup.

Raaaabert: Thanks for recommending the grocery store in the arcade near the Markthall!! I'm glad that the food items are labelled with prices,they are not over the due dates and they are neatly stacked on the shelves!

sojoh: Is the Nippon Shop opened from 2pm - 6pm Tuesdays - Fridays? Based on a google result, it stated that the restaurant is closed during that time.........

SingaporeanGal glad you've settled in one week! speedy. Looks like your gastronomic samplings have taken you far and wide, I can recommend Lotscberg restaurant, in fact I was there last night and it was excellent as usual.

There is an English Speaking Club of Bern which opens its bar on Thursday and Friday nights, friendly bunch of people from my experience - last week was my first time. People from all over the world so dont be shy. Tschuuuuuuusssss

Thanks for your recommendations again! Did you go for the gathering at Kornhauskeller yesterday? It was organized by a member of the Bern and Berne Social Group and actually yesterday was their 2nd gathering. I was there 1st time yesterday and I think it's pretty good start for me to get to know more people in Bern.

the shop in liebefeld is very big and always have fresh fruts and vegetables.

when you also interested, I could give you the phone nr. of my asian cook from which I have learnd chinese and thai food to cook. he is a very nice person, he is chinese and works as a cook.

mayby he still organices the cooking hours.

also there are some asian restaurants in markthalle bubenbergplatz, and a good shop for fresh fish and vegetable in schwanengasse, these is near bei bubenbergplatz where the markthalle is

down in the markthalle are indian, turkisch and other nice restaurants. everytime when I visite bern I go to markthalle.

also in the new shopping center in brünnen there are some asian restaurants. go with bus 14 (loeb ecke) to the end (brünnen) there is a big shopping center with restaurant, cinema and bathing.

I've just moved from Thun to Bern, so I thought I'd search for Asian grocery stores, and this thread is useful.

In case anybody's in Thun, there are a few Asian grocery stores on the Obere Hauptgasse, but the largest and best is Hong Kong:

It's just across the road from http://www.asliceofhome.ch/, which you really should visit, though it's rather more British than Asian ;-)

And also on the Obere Hauptgasse (no. 23) is the Bistro Bosporus, with the best Falafel in Flatbread I've had yet in Switzerland.

I'm from Asia myself, but I have say the Asian food in Switzerland is quite disappointing.

Some places I still can recommend:

1. Cha cha (Bern westside) Thai/Chinese food, nice interior design, great after a shopping day/spa day in the mall

2. Mekong (next to the Spaghetti Factory right on the corner of McDo at Zytglogge) food is tasty, good service, small place for 10-15 persons, always fully booked in the evening, so early reservation is recommended

3. Borky (Hirschengraben, in front of the cinema, next to the Starbucks) food is good and "authentic". Probably the best you could get in bern, but still can't compare with Chinese standard...

4. Chinese take away, Monbijoustrasse (in front of the kisser training gym) I go there very often, just because it's just a hop away from my place.

Connecting with Chinese/Asian expats in Bern/Switzerland, there is a Facebook group you've just missed the last meet up which was last week Sunday in Bern...they do organize different meet ups regularly.
