Where to find foods from home

I've been thinking about making a little webpage (wiki???) that would list where to find various food items that are hard to find here. Things like cheddar cheese, baking chocolate, brown sugar, etc. I've got my own list but I bet if we compiled all our 'finds' it would be pretty comprehensive! Thoughts? contributions?

Re: Where to find foods from home

You know where to get brown sugar? There was a hoard of people wandering around Globus and Jemoli searching for brown sugar around Thanksgiving time.

Cheddar Cheese, both Globus and Jemoli have it, although I think the cheddar you get from the cheese counter at Coop is better. The El Maiz (Mexican store on Josefstrasse in Zurich) has really good preshredded cheddar cheese that is delicious for quesadillas.

But yes, good idea. Much better than searching the forum for individual food items.

The London Store in Zug
http://www.londonstore.ch/
has brown sugar. They ship in CH, and claim to be opening a branch in Zurich although I haven't checked it out. You can also get a reasonable brown sugar in some German border towns.

I've been getting the cheddar at Migros, but they seem to have it only at the Migros City on Loewenplatz and the one at Kalkbreite.

Oh, and do all the Coop counters have cheddar? I've looked at 3 or 4 but never seen it there.

Re: Where to find foods from home

I go to the Coop at Central or Oerlikon and they both have cheddar at the cheese counter. Although sometimes you have to point it out to them

I think any Coop with a cheese counter has it.

Britshop.ch is another place for "homey" stuff.
Carrefour counters also have cheddar.

Re: Where to find foods from home

Great idea! Go for it. I was looking for cornflour the other day as I wanted to make a lemon meringue pie! Yes, I found it in Coop, but then found it in our little supermarket in Schopfheim, Germany. (You just have to know what you're looking for - love that song!). I love twisties (yeh, an Aussie through and through) and found them in Globus, but of course different packaging.
Keep us all posted when you start and I'm sure we would all love to join in.
Regards,
Gaynor

Re: Where to find foods from home

In my experience, sometimes you can get the food items one looks for in Switzerland, but they are often called differently, but are basically or very similar to the ones one knows from home.Well this goes for basic ingredients of course, not necessarily the branded stuff.

I took the time a long time ago to write up a lexicon in five lingos about all things food related, it's not complete and even not in alphabetical order, but it has been helpful to many an expatriate so far

And I think Jack of www.laughinglemon.ch has something similar on his website.

anyhoo, to add to the list of Andrea

http://www.tasteofamerica.ch/ for foods from the US of A

and not foodie related but also something expats from America often miss, here's a swiss based online shop for scrapbooking

Are these the Fonzies or something else? Fonzies are packed similar to Twisties, look a bit like them but taste horrid.

I get my twisties twist from http://www.aussieshop.ch
that even carry Bundaberg ginger beer

And brown sugar!

Glad to hear it arrived well.
Luckily we had no breakages so far since we started back in August.

And they've started to stock some American products now, too.

They're located near Spalentor - just get off the tram and walk back a block and a half on the left hand side of the street (if you're heading away from Spalentor).

The London Store in Zürich is now open but it is a bit on the small size. It's on the road below Rigiblick, IIRC tram is Seilbahn Rigiblick. It is part of the DVD store there.

To be honest, if you look at what most ex-pats are trying to get hold of, its no bloody wonder we are becoming an obese nation.

Creamy curries, crisps, chocolate, sugary drinks, ready made food... urghhhh we should be glad we can't get hold of them and get used to a more balanced swiss diet.

Try my diet for example - Dieci Pizza, Betti Bossi ready food, paprika crisps and mövenpick ice cream. Old hobbits die hard (4.0).

If any one is interested, a Scottish buddy of mine is a Butcher that works in Jelmoli. He's started making Back bacon and selling it through the store for CHF 35 per Kilo. He sells it privately for 25.
If anyone is interested let me know, and I'll pass you on his details.
