Re: fresh at the market - june/july

Saturday at the market in Oerlikon: chioggia beets, fresh borlotti beans, baby fennel, young broccoli, daikon, violet eggplant, mini-eggplant, very young zucchini, summer chanterelle mushrooms, cherries, Cavaillon melons, strawberries, fabulous Piemontese apricots...

What a fabulous time to shop for fresh food...

Re: fresh at the market - june/july

One note of caution for fresh markets - choose the vendors that have a raised area (like a mobile home type vehicle) and don't just put their goods on wood tables. Many of the vendors that use wood tables first put the plastic crates of goods on the ground. This is problematic due to obvious contaminants on the ground as well as dogs allowed in these areas (unlike in some countries where public health rules prohibit pets into fresh market areas.) I've noted on more than 3 occasions a dog urinating on some of the fresh produce in these crates on the ground.

Strange...been going to the market in Zürich for over ten years and I haven't seen this before...

How do you cope with food vendors not wearing white rubber gloves the whole time when handling food?

Was it the same dog every time?

Re: fresh at the market - june/july

Spotted the year's first Swiss blueberries at the market this morning...everything continues to be about 3-weeks early it seems...

Also spotted (and bought) some very, very good Swiss new potatoes - very light color with a fine and loose skin! Perfect for steaming!

Happy shopping...
Jack

Re: fresh at the market - june/july

Saturday at the Oerlikon market...amazing fresh products!

Fruit: white saturno peaches (Italy), 8 different strawberry varieties, plenty of cherries, figs, apricots...

Vegies: swiss bell peppers, swiss zucchini, squash flowers, swiss peas, the last Sicilian pachino tomatoes...

For the meat eaters: make sure to pick up some summer venison, porc noir spare ribs, ground water buffalo (all from Fiechter)...

This is just a small sampling...

Happy shopping,
Jack

Friday at Helvetiaplatz market:

Purple Rocket, cornichons, red onions from Tropea Italy, green figs from Puglia, white Caramelle peaches, squash blossoms (Swiss), blueberries, very aromatic strawberries, Savoy cabbage, beetroot, purple kohlrabi, and plenty more...

For those who never tried purple rocket...we did a blog posting a couple of years ago on this product: Purple Rocket

Happy shopping...

Re: fresh at the market - june/july

Great selection of fresh food at the Oerlikon market today: Legumes, legumes, legumes... new Swiss potatoes, tons of salad (including crispy mini-Romaine), strawberries, white Caramelle Bianchi peaches, Jolly melons (Sicily), local blackberries, raspberries and red currants!

More What's in Season

Happy Shopping and Cooking

Re: fresh at the market - june/july

Great thread! But i you are really interested in buying GREAT fruit cheaply, go to Konstanz for their market - Tuesday and Friday mornings. The prices are a fraction of Zurich prices and the fruit comes generally from the Bodensee area. Although the Alps are great for a lot of things, for fruit and vegetables, go to Konstanz!
