Shopping around Schaffhausen

Hi folks

Just wondering if anyone from the Schaffhausen area can recommend good local grocery and household type stores. Found the coop in the town but the food section was pretty limited, is this standard, or are there better options around and reachable by walking or public transport. Also anyone know of any farmer's markets nearby? Is schlepping to Germany to save some money, a good option from Schaffhausen?

Any tips would be great, thanks a million
Orla

I'd go to Waldshut or that area from Schaffhausen.

Re: Shopping around Schaffhausen

Go to Singen or Waldhut you can catch the train from Shaaffhaussen, no problem. Unfortunately Wall Mart closed down in Singen a few weeks ago!!

Re: Shopping around Schaffhausen

Hi Orla,

I also recommend Herblingermarkt. There you have a pretty good-sized Migros and Coop (although the Coop is now somehow limited because it's undergoing refurbishments. opens again in full size in september).
Those are basically the 2 supermarkets I've used in the last 3 years, they're near my home and the parking's free. Edit: just noticed you don't care about parking, but this is reached by the number 5 bus

I think many people do go to Germany (at least it looks like it from the amount of german supermarket leaflets I get at home, hehe), but I've never done it. There's a limit to what you can bring, which I don't know, and I'm always afraid to be stopped by the police at the border (though that never happened before....).

I don't know any farmer's markets though. There is one in the city centre, I think on thursdays and saturday mornings, it's a building near the parking behind St.Johan's church (the one in the centre), but I've never been inside, just saw the banners on off-days. Maybe give it a try?

Re: Shopping around Schaffhausen

there is a great farmers market with veggies, fruit, fresh meat, fish every saturday morning in jestetten .
10 min. train ride from schaffhausen. and the police will not stop you at the border , the zoll will to that.
you can get info online i think of what you are allowed to bring back to switzerland . also most of the stores in jestetten can give you that info as well.
great little town with lots of shopping to do...and all in walking distance from the train station.
www.jestetten.de

i think there is a farmers market every saturday in the unterstadt ( vordergasse) in schafffhausen..

Just out of curiosity, is there a large grocery store within walking distance (10-15 min at the most) of the train station in Waldshut? One does have to carry things back. The Edeka I occasionally go to -- it is just beyond the Old Town if walking from the train station -- is rather small, and I would presume doesn't offer the selection that Orla wants.

I'd love to find a larger grocery store within walking distance of the train station.

Re: Shopping around Schaffhausen

Thanks guys, all very helpful info, I have found the migros and the coop attached to the manor store on vordegasse strasse and both have a pretty good selection of stuff, and also very close to railway station. Both are much better than the smaller coop I originally stumbled into. A trip to Jeststetten sounds like a lovely idea.
