Hmmm! Steak and kidney pudding, Haggis, or just plain old steamed chops and veg.

Don't think I've ever steamed anything myself...I suppose just Dim Sum when eating out. Steamed doesn't sound very tasty

Re: What do people think of steamed food?

Try marinating first and steaming with beef or vegetable stock. Then when things are done use the stock for a sauce.
Hungry now, must consenscdrate... concentrate.

Re: What do people think of steamed food?

Lots but a childhood, and still an all time favourite is steamed egg with minced pork - mum's recipe.

1. Season minced pork with sesame oil, white pepper, a dash of soya sauce. Let it marinate for about 1 hour and fry it with some chopped spring onions, till its cooked.

2. Add it into 3-4 large beaten eggs (To minimize bubbles, do not beat the eggs but gently stir the eggs with a pair of chopsticks using a cutting action).

3. Steam over high heat for 15 minutes and serve with rice.

Nom nom. Might make me some tonight.

Re: What do people think of steamed food?

Steamed eggplant is an excellent simple side dish.

The key ingredient in the dressing is red rice vinegar, available at Asian markets. This steamed eggplant recipe serves 4 to 6
Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: 5 minutes

Total Time: 10 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 4 Asian eggplants
  • 2 tablespoons red rice vinegar (note: not red wine vinegar)
  • 2 tablespoons light soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil, such as canola
  • 1/4 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons granulated sugar
Preparation:

Remove the stalk from the eggplants. Cut in the middle and then cut each half lengthwise so that you have 4 equal pieces.

Steam the eggplant over high heat until softened (about 5 minutes). Remove from the heat and cool.

Whisk together the remaining ingredients. Pour over the eggplant and serve.

Re: What do people think of steamed food?

I had to chuck my steamer out recently as it broke. I need to get a new one.. keep forgetting. I love steamed vegetables! All of them! The oddest one that I steamed was sweet potato. The reason why I say that is because once it is done, it feels really weird.. like an internal organ or something.. I actually got quite grossed out and asked my husband to peel the thing

I used to also, but you really do lose a ton of vitamins and nutrients into the water when you boil them. Steaming keeps everything inside, with the added bonus that you just set them times and forget about it. They really are amazing, I use mine all the time now.

My argument is always that I don't like veggies with a 'bite' to them, I want them soft so I can mash it through the potatoes (2 part veggies, 1 part potatoes). To compensate I eat a lot of veggies, much more then as when I would steam them...

Re: What do people think of steamed food?

We like to eat steamed spicy food (fish, lamb, rice).
We learned a very easy and very tasty steamed rice recipe called "djerbian rice": use small parts of lamb cut in 1cm cube (preferably with some fat and bones).

Re: What do people think of steamed food?

I see the difference between boiling and steaming, but
what's the difference between steaming and nuking?

Eg., steaming vegies in a steamer vs. microwaving same vegies?
