Hi,

can anyone recommend a really big kitchen/flatware/cutlery/glasses, homewares kind of shop in Zurich area ?

I get really annoyed when I go to a 'big' Migros but find the same narrow selection of eating/kitchen items...

I've tried Jelmoli in Zurich but they had miles of coffee machines, and no kitchenware (unless I missed it, plenty of fabulous food, though!)...

And Globus, which was still quite limited for ordinary drinking glasses.

I just need 'ordinary' kitchen stuff, and I can three of this and two of that at the second-hand shops, but we are a family of 5 so need a decent supply of stuff (eg. 12 x everything)!

Thanks for any/all suggestions, and I'd prefer not to go the Ikea option if there's a mid-way alternative...

We got a lot of decent glasses, plates, etc in Interio. Sort of middle-range quality, I think.

I've tried Interio in Zurich city centre - is there a bigger Interio I should try ?

There is one in Dübendorf at the big furniture center.

Coop City has a plain white set for CHF 40 for 4 people including a bowl, plate, small plate and teacup and saucer. We got a set for 8 when we first arrived 8 years ago and most of it is still unbroken. I'm considering replacing the broken pieces with a new set of the same.

The Ikea 365 range has great stuff too.

Where's the biggest coop city ? I know the stores in the Bahnhofstrasse and at Bellevue like the back of my hand..

Sorry, I don't know where any of the stores in Zurich are. We used to have the Ikea 365 silverware in the US, and we gave most of it away when we moved and got something else, but I really liked the 365 stuff - I still have most of the big pieces... it has a nice feel for something so basic.

Definitely would go to a big Interio, they have nice kitchen things in mid-range prices. Globus also has some nice things but I find them overpriced. I know you said no IKEA but their more "higher priced" kitchenware is actually quite good and durable. Their cheap wine glasses I would avoid, I seem to break one of them every 2 weeks. :/

Well, I tried the local Migros and found some cutlery that seemed reasonable...and a brochure for their range of drinking glasses, but not all stocked on the shelf...might have to go looking (not on leshop either)...

I'm totally with you on the Ikea break-ability factor for their drinking glasses...

For the past 10 years we've used some tempered glasses which were coffee cups with metal handles that clipped off - the handles are long gone, but the glasses have been used 1-2 times a day for more than 10 years

But I have to say a combination of three children plus a tile floor in the kitchen has meant a slow but sure decline in numbers...I think we started with 2 dozen and now we are down to 7...

So, point being, I can highly recommend using tempered coffee glasses as 'drinking' glasses for everyday use - but I've not seen anything similar here...

I believe there is a member (or two?) who is a tupperware consultant, perhaps getting some for the kids would be a good way to save the "nice" glasses for yourself and sweetie, guests and special occasions.

Incidentally, my mother just found where a box of my old dishes (including a variety of tupperware items) were where they'd gotten buried under other things all of us "kids" have left to gather dust in her garage as adults. (I'd wanted to bring them but had been unable to wade through the mountain before my move. )
