Re: Food Rations...do you know these guys?

As for Pennsylvania Dutch, aren't many of them Swiss Anabaptists in origin.
Some of them were Swiss (Anabaptist refugees settled in Germany, then some generations later emigrated from there) but most were originally German, either Lutheran or Reformed.

A decent proportion of Pennsylvania Deutsch did originate in Switzerland...perhaps you've come home!
It's possible. According to my grandmother, our lot were Bavarians - but whether that's based on 260 years of oral tradition, actual research, or whether she's just googled her mother's maiden name I don't know.

(Anecdotally, the few words of Pennsylvania Dutch she still remembers don't sound to me like Bavarian or Swiss German...)

And some (if not all) of the above surely qualify as Emergency Relief Goods!

OK OK. But we were talking groceries here. Migros doesn't do porn.

Although thinking about it, there is a porn shop in the basement of a co-op centre near here.....

Back to some of the originally original reasons behind home food reserve supplies...courtesy of today's FT.com:
Quote:
Corn prices hit a two-year high on Monday, jumping more than 8 per cent, as traders scrambled to buy after the US Department of Agriculture warned last week of “dramatically” lower supplies because of bad weather.
Corn prices have surged more than 15 per cent over the past two days, making the jump one of the biggest in recent history and prompting some analysts to warn that the world was fast moving into another food crisis.
UN officials acknowledged over the weekend that the balance between supply and demand in the corn market was “fragile”, but insisted that the world would not see a repetition of the 2007-08 crisis.
Paul
p.s. I daresay that the pörn industry does not suffer from the same kind of price tensions and shortages :-D

And did you really suffer in the 07-08 crisis (that the UN doesn't think will repeat anyway)?

Mathnut: 20 minutes there, 5 minutes in shop, 20 minutes home= 45 minutes

DB: 13 minutes to first pub, 20 minutes in pub, 7 minutes on to store, 15 minutes in store as glutinous objects are ogled, 10 minutes to 2nd pub , 10 minutes in pub as Mathnut's foot tapping becomes audible at this distance, 10 minutes home while concocting tale explaining time discrepancy that is unbelievable but entertaining enough that it is accepted=85 minutes
Hmmmm.....makes me wonder why we can't have any functioning watch, clock, and alarms at home.

I bet DB doesn't fib, though...yet...or does he?

It's not fibbing ... just creative recounting!

At least it's not illegal, unlike creative accounting ...
