Re: Big Mac's Cheese

I seem to remember from advertisings many years ago, that it is "Chester Schmelzkäse". I am just not sure, if theses Radio spots were McDonalds, or somebody else.

Doc.

It's made by a dairy company...

It is cheese made from real milk. There is beef made from real cow (and only cow) and it's between real swiss vegetables and bread made from wheat flour. Saying anything else is really libel of the worst kind.

I bet there wouldn't be so many sarcy comments if the OP was asking about something wanky like truffles or fromage de poodle.

Yup. I'm sure there'd be tons of straight answers if the OP was asking about some 4 year old unpasteurised monstrosity that tastes like feet and that's really healthy until you get E. Coli. Apart from the high levels of saturated fat of course.

I'm surprised you don't like that nice unpasteurised stuff, Economisto.

BTW . . . I'm quite fine with people liking industrial food and I do eat burgers. I was just genuinely surprised that someone was lauding the Maccy D stuff in Switzerland. And I did think they might be joking!

I do! I love it. But that's not the point. Take Grumpy's cheese. Do I think it's better than Big Mac cheese? Yes. A hundred times better. In every way. But in the same way as his cheese doesn't help cure cancer or make you earn more, so the Big Mac cheese isn't "evil" and doesn't cause heart disease or obesity or any other ailment more than high quality cheese. It's just a bit rubbery and tasteless (to me). There's nothing unilaterally wrong with it.

That's fine, and, of course, you're entitled to your opinion anyway.

It's just a bit annoying that everytime anyone ever asks a question about any kind of food that isn't some kind of "gourmet" delicacy, there's a rash of comments like the ones in this thread. It's like there should be some kind of stigma on liking normal food, like what normal people eat.

The other thing that's a pain in the arse is when someone asks where they can get fish fingers, say, and they are helpfully told that they can make it themselves... "Oh, it's easy... you just need prime coelocanth flesh from the Turkish deli at the back of the market that's only open on Tuesdays from six till seven, and you need to grind your own breadcrumbs and, oh, it will only take you twenty hours or so..."

It stinks, just a tad, of the kind of surreptitious snobbery that pervades the "lifestyle" columns in the weekend papers.

But that's the EF for you.

In fact, that's expats, and more so the sort of expats that'll choose to come to Switzerland. They're a very special type you know.

I've noticed.

Sometimes it feels like I've moved to Surrey by accident...

Re: Big Mac's Cheese

Defining "normal" would probably go into a whole different discussion esp. here in Switzerland.

Surrey on speed. Can I recommend Cairo? The main expat question there is
"where do you get the cheapest cigarettes?"

"oh, I go to this warehouse on the Pyramids Road - the marlboros are fake, put together from twigs just outside Isfahan, but goodness - 9 pence a pack!"

I wonder how many 'normal' people in the UK are posting on forums, trying to hunt down Macdonalds cheese.

I don't know why you seem to have a grudge against people who like good food. I'm not saying that everyone should have the same interest as me. Are you questioning the very idea of a qualitative judgement of food? I guess they'll have to cancel all those cheese championships, wine tastings and sack the Michelin inspectors.

Did anyone in this thread make those criticisms?

I was just surprised someone thought it was 'the best'.
