Bye bye Punter

Ricky Ponting has resigned as Australia test and one-day captain .

Michael Clarke will take over

There's no denying his talent as a cricketer, but was he really an outstanding captain? He was lucky to be surrounded by some of the greatest players of modern times, but as soon as they retired, Australia under his captaincy went backwards at a rate of knots.

Depends on whether the ECB want a single captain across all formats, I guess. Personally I find it odd to have different captains in cricket as the players are often the same and the formats for test and ODI have a similar global profile vs. T20 and unlike, e.g. 15s vs 7s in rugby, where the latter has a much lower profile.

However, Strauss' recent form strikes me as odd. Although England as whole failed in the ODI WC, Strauss seemed to be scoring at a run a ball rate or more just recently. Something I don't recall him ever doing before...

Any-hoo, all academic now that England are down and out...
