Well played Aussies, fully deserved series victory, all credit to their management and players.
If only it was against a cricket team, still waiting for the real team to arrive

Still racial profiling? Good for you, its a controversial subject
I don't think it's racial profiling -- at least, that's not what I intend. In this instance, we have one player who has appeared for Ireland and had to serve out a waiting period to qualify for England, and another who was probably Zimbabwe's best junior player and a major hope for their senior side, who came to England on a cricketing scholarship with nebulous links to England (he has English grandparents).

There are two things that bug me about this. Firstly, Ireland and Zimbabwe need all the decent players they can find -- Ireland, as it continues to press for Test status, and Zimbabwe, struggling to lift itself from the bottom of the Test rankings. Having their best players flock to England really harms cricket in the "minnow" nations.

Secondly, English "nationality" is an odd concept. There is no such thing as English citizenship, so what makes a person English? If a Zimbabwean or Irishman acquires British citizenship, how does that make him English or Welsh (and therefore eligible for.selection by the ECB), rather than, say Scottish? From memory, the requirement is residence in England for a certain minimum period (plus UK citizenship). In my opinion -- and that's all it is -- that doesn't make one English, any more than I am -- and I fulfil all the requirements.

Make that a whitewash first team to ever lose 100 wickets in an ashes series making them the worst ever.
That's happened many times before.

Exhibit A: grace in defeat.
Exhibit B, on the other hand ...

Without this approach england would be unable to field a team in most spirting events since the majority typically come from outside the UK

As an English person, I don't like the liberal eligibility rules either. If your pool of players isn't good enough, then tough. To deplete another country's even smaller pool is immoral and unsportsmanlike (IM(es)HO).

Absolutely, England haven't managed a decent home-grown spirting team since the unspirtables in the late 1920s.

Its a red herring this 'racial purity' thing. If a player is qualified to play for a country under the rules, then that's good enough for me

But is this approach any different to the ANZAC habit of 'borrowing' south sea island rugby players?

The players and sporting authorities in question are playing by the current rules, the same as many other nations do in many other sports.

No, it isn't any different. The rules are wrong, as mirfield points out.

I'm not sure what the army has to do with sport, though.

Indeed. Here are some interesting stats (totals for series ... I'll put the scores the wrong way around, to keep the English happy ):

2013 Ashes in England

AUS 2,735/89, average 30.73, RPO 3.37
ENG 2,856/85, average 33.60, RPO 2.99

2013/14 Ashes in Australia (after three Tests)

AUS 2,152/45, average 47.82, RPO 3.72
ENG 1,403/60, average 23.38, RPO 2.83

So a quick-and-dirty analysis could conclude that, based on batting averages, England was 9.3% better than Australia in the 2013 Ashes. In the current series, Australia has so far outplayed England by 104.5%.

The difference in scoring rates between the two teams is also quite telling -- Australia has consistently demonstrated intent, in both series. And it's well known that Australia has scored more than 400 runs in four of their 16 innings so far in the last two Ashes series; England hasn't passed that mark once.

And of course, no Englishman has yet scored a century in the current series ...
Update and final summary:

2013 Ashes in England

AUS 2,735/89, average 30.73, RPO 3.37
ENG 2,856/85, average 33.60, RPO 2.99

2013/14 Ashes in Australia

AUS 3,189/77, average 41.42, RPO 3.75
ENG 2,158/100, average 21.58, RPO 2.89

So the good news for England is that they managed to bring Australia's batting average down and lifted their own scoring rate in the last two Tests ...

England's batsmen managed one century this series. Australia recorded 10. England didn't reach 400 runs in an innings in either of the two complete Ashes series; Australia passed that mark four times.

This series was a little one-sided.
