Yeh but if your daughter (or mine incidentally) spend their whole life in Switzerland....how British are they still?

To me it would be where their roots are but their home is still Switzerland.

Much like if I wanted to play cricket for Pakistan. Have a Pakistani passport. Only ever gone for 'holidays' there.

Fair point, she has a British passport, she has British parents, she speaks English fluently and spends annual holidays in the uk. Most importantly, unprompted she says she is British even though she is born here and is fluent. Thats good enough for me.

Re: Ashes 2013 on YouTube

England have the ability in their team and it is a mystery why the favoured batsmen have not been in form for the last three tests. Maybe they got too used to the Idea of beating Australia as it has been the norm for the last seven years. Even if England were to bring in new players there are not many on the fringe that could make a difference now or in the near future.

this is a tired and over the hill England team, many players are dining out on their reputations. We got hammered, let's not pretend we're not that bad.

Does it? I'll take your word for it.

I added each pair of innings' scores and averaged them, then averaged the averages by adding the resulting three match averages and dividing by three. It wasn't hard -- Kev hasn't troubled the scorers much. 64 was as high as I had to count.

England made the Aussies look a lot better than they actually are.

Agreed.

But as I alluded to, there are not enough players on the fringe to make a difference.

I'm not sure, we need to give a new generation a chance and give Root and Carberry more responsibility. Stokes lead the way in the last test, there is no reason why others cannot step up to the mark

KP's had his day I agree and I will remember him as the man who knocked Oz off their arrogant perch.

Maybe that's the problem: that the English thought they had been dominating Australia for the last seven years. They won three consecutive Ashes series over the last 4.5 years, by slim margins. They've been far from dominant; Australia's streak of eight consecutive Ashes series victories was an example of dominance.

In 2005, England regained the Ashes with a 2-1 series result which included one match won by two runs. Next series, Australia whitewashed England 5-0. The 2009 series went to England 2-1 again, with the win for Australia being an innings victory. The 2010-11 series in Australia was the only example of English dominance, featuring a high-scoring draw (England declared its second innings at 1/517) and three English victories (each by an innings) to Australia's one (by 267 runs). The 3-0 scoreline of the series earlier this year in England hugely flattered the hosts, as already discussed in this thread.

yes but that was your best team ever, a team bulging with Aussie legends. I like the way you underplay that England series victory! haha

Whether it was graceful or ugly, a win is a win. Get over it and be happy Oz won.

It wasn't Australia's best team ever. It was a team of ageing Aussie legends, and the team that lost the match by two runs didn't include Glenn McGrath. Saying it was our best team ever is a bit like saying that a Rolling Stones/Beatles/Pink Floyd reunion concert features the UK's best ever music lineup.

Not taking anything away from the England team of 2005, they did well, but they didn't work miracles (and definitely didn't deserve the hysterical sycophantic reactions of the British press and people that followed the series).

Re: Ashes 2013 on YouTube

2005 was a great Ashes test series. I get 22 yards' point regarding marginal wins....but that's why it's a 5 match series to give time to make up for that.

England played a lot better than they were in 2005 to win, and were well and truly hyped up by the Great British Press afterwards. Only to go to Pakistan and lose badly in a test series there a few months later.
