Re: Joe Root - Best thing to happen to English cricket since Vaughan?

I think the Aussies faced similar crisis in the mid eighties post retirement of the Chappels. But it took a guy like Border to mend things up. But at least then the domestic cricket was still a robust structure. I hear horror stories these days from friends down under. But I still think Aussies will not go the WI way. WI losses a great deal of talent to Yankee sports like Volleyball and Baseball.

We won`t go as far as WI demise in my opinion simply because of population size of us vs the WI.

The potential problem is the same volume of kids won`t come through.

There is little money in cricket in Australia even at Sheffield Shield level, much more money in cricket in the UK, so why would you really think about it as a potential career?

OTOH I think there is some kind of increase in sub-continental immigrants down under. The kind of which might get into the mix a la Usman Khawaja!!

2 years and few months later Joe Root surely has shown that he pretty much belongs. 3000 runs, 8 tons @55 and he is just 25. Ballance is the other guy who I think will achieve bigger things.
