What on earth are Sauber and Kaltenborn doing? They didn't have 3 drivers signed up for 2 seats, they had 5!

Van der Garde has settled, but should they be facing criminal charges? What they've done borders on fraud.

Exactly, although the Ferarri has improved significantly from last year. Bet Alonso is well chuffed, plonker!

Engine899 has no particular reputation at present
Next F1 stage will be in Austria, this sunday. I think Williams could reduce the gap between Mercedes and Ferrari. Also Lotus could be a real outsider. It will be a great show!

What do you think about?

After today's (Austria) practice, Alonso must have a few regrets nagging away at him.

Re: The 2015 F1 Thread

The results of the fan survey are now in Autosport.

A couple of things worth mulling over:
Was the racing actually that much better 10,20,30,40 years ago? Or is our perception of it actually being better?

If we look at the early-mid 80s - an era which I believe offered the best racing - is that actually true? Did the like of Pironi, Reutemann, Jones, Piquet, Villenueve actually deliver better racing in the early 80s OR was Rosberg's title in 1982 (taken with just 1 race win) more a result of a general lack of reliability?? We also remember the 85-87 period as one of the 4-way battle of Prost-Senna-Mansell-Piquet - but how often did they really battle wheel to wheel? And how often did they gallop off into the distance? I certainly remember races where the only cars on the winning lap were from a single team.

Was McLaren's 1984/85 dominance any better/worse than that of Williams in 85/86, McLaren's 1988-1991, Willams 1992-1994, Benetton 1995-1996 and so on??

It could be argued that Schumacher's titles in the Benetton were the last titles where the best car didn't win the title - and before that Prost in 86.

The thing is F1 as it is now is what it has become based on every tightening regulations and in theory an attempt to control costs - but it is big business now - and that requires a different approach.

From a spectator though - F1 racing isn't exciting, beyond the first corner. Last weekend ITV was jammed pack with quality motorsport - not only did the BTCC do battle at Croft - with Sheddon and Neal delivering some stunning overtaking - but Formula E had 2 races. As a sceptic I didn't get Formula E at the start - but the racing has been superb. OK Tempelhof looked a bit silly - but Moscow and certainly Battersea were fantastic to watch. Overtaking, cars sliding, cars touching - it was brilliantly exciting.

I don't have an answer to what F1 needs to do to make the sport more "fun" to watch - I suspect regulations which comprise of: single vane front wings, single vane rear wing, no lateral appendages beyond the core bodywork, wide tyres, much limited fuel and free to develop engines would work - but I suspect if the cars appeared to be overly powered it would at least appear more exciting

Re: The 2015 F1 Thread

I think the previous years were actually pretty good.
Vettel was dominant but the Red Bull car was not so dominant.
Now Mercedes did a better job than everyone else and is rewarded for that, just like we have seen many times before.

My only concern is that other teams cannot improve their engines. It is a stupid rule.

Re: The 2015 F1 Thread

Can anyone tell me which UK channel showed the Austin Formula 1 race live on Sunday? Or a subsequent full highlights show.
As the eventual time was not scheduled, I cannot find the live race on UPC/Cablecom channels. I was at a pub quiz on Sunday night so I think we watched it on Sky.

I wanted to see all the detailed analysis and Nico Rosberg chucking his baseball cap back at Lewis Hamilton, but the highlights show late on Sunday night was a little to compacted to relish all the small morels of excitement.

Thanks,
HB

Highlights were on BBC1, at about 23.30 CET, I think.

ETA - I guess this is the one you saw. I don't think there was another besides Sky.

BBC2 repeated the highlights on Monday afternoon. Sky showed the race live I believe, but I've no idea what repeats they may have done later. Beeb will be doing the same for the upcoming Mexican GP this weekend. Highlights on Sunday night on BBC 1, repeated Monday afternoon on BBC2.

Or watch on rtl, in German.
Just as good as the BBC, in my opinion.
Also, the interviews with Niki Lauda about delayed qualifying were very amusing.

Yes thanks for the replies. I watched a replay on RTL and then there were commercials every few minutes (more than ITV used to have) so I watched on ORD which also had the Lauda interview (I wish he'd speak up ! ;-) ).
But I thought BBC1 or 2 used to replay the entire race show in the early hours of the morning.
Hey ho. It was fun watching Nico sulking. The cap had 2nd written on it.
I thought Nico's pole should have meant he earned the right to start ahead and on the side of the direction of the first bend. In the end Hamilton had an equal advantage of the inside line.
He was naughty I think edging Nico off the circuit on the first bend.
Reminded me of Senna deliberately driving into Prost in 1990 a little.
But Nico lost his slim chance all by himself with his unforced error so he should really man up.
I think the BBC got their priorities wrong not showing Lewis winning the race live on TV. But late on a Sunday I guess it is difficult to make a call about which shows have priority.
Hopefully there won't be these issues when Hamilton wins his 4th championship.
I like the guy somehow even though he's not everyone's cup of tea.
