2009 World Ice Hockey Championships in Switzerland

The 2009 IIHF World Hockey Championships will take place in Switzerland April 24th to May 10th, 2009, in Bern and Zurich.

I know this is a long way off, but tickets will go on sale in a few days (September 8th at 8:09 am, to be precise) so it's already time to start thinking about which games you want to see. You can purchase tickets online through the official website www.iihfworlds2009.com or through ticketcorner.

All tournament information, including team information and schedules, are on the official website.

GO CANADA!!!!

Yes, go Canada!

Hopefully, I won't see any Oilers on Team Canada (that means they're still in the Stanley Cup playoffs).

Re: 2009 World Ice Hockey Championships in Switzerland

I went to see a game in Munich at the 1993 Championships and one of the only things I can remember from that event was that I could hardly see the puck from where I was seated. Come to think of it, I did derive some entertainment from watching burly helmeted men sliding around the rink and ramming each other. I might be tempted to see this again, even for a mere 49CHF.

I think visually following a puck on ice is sort of like acquiring a langauge: if you don't learn it at a young age, you'll never quite master the skill. I took some friends to watch Lausanne play last year and they had no idea what was going on. Thankfully, my rural Canadian upbringing (which included watching Hockey Night in Canada on a small TV with fuzzy CBC reception) means I can spot a puck just about anywhere!

Haven't decided which games to go see yet. Thankfully, I still have a bit of time to decide...

Heather

You have 2 in the NLA - Kloten Flyers (one of the venues for the tournament) and ZSC Lions.

Personally, I'm all for EV Zug as they're my local team

I'm getting a tournament pass. It is a little pricey, but totally worth it. I have followed this tourney for years, so I'm excited to finally see it in person...

Re: 2009 World Ice Hockey Championships in Switzerland

Belarus VS Canada. 24.04.2009
i am so going to be there.
Having been born in Belarus and worked in canada. Its going to be great (if a little one sided)

Mikey cheers for the heads up on those to teams i will deffinatly "check" them out.
Also i have found a small team where i live near wettingen i will hopefully do some try outs for them this winter also.

As far as seeing the puck, instead just look for the person everybody is trying to hit, then you will find the puck.

You can buy tickets here for ZSC Lions matches (the current league champs).
The season is about to start...

Re: 2009 World Ice Hockey Championships in Switzerland

Hockey may well become my new favourite sport. I love the way the refs stand a little way off during a fight and only jump in when someone is on the floor. I used to love watching Aussie Rules footy fights on tv, but eventually they stopped filming the fights, they still happened, you just hardly got to see them. Going live to a game was not an option as I lived in the outback, where I had to make do with water-polo, which was fun to play as the ref couldn't see the action under water.
PS would anyone other than Aussies have understood if I'd said Umps instead of refs. I feel so american.

Re: 2009 World Ice Hockey Championships in Switzerland

I'll be going to the semi-final games with my sister who'll be over visiting then.

Anyone want to join us? They are on Saturday May 8th in Berne.
