FC Zurich/Grasshoppers

Does anyone take in a game with the local Zurich teams, do you need a ticket or can you just pay on the gate?
The football may not be premiership class but after just arriving in Zurich and watching Leicester this season its got to better than I have suffered this year!

Re: FC Zurich/Grasshoppers

I tend to watch FCB, especially when they are beat FCZ or GC, which is always a satisifying feeling, but that is when the highlights are on tv. Usually is pretty hard to get FCB season tickets but with the new extensions to the stadium for Euro 08 it might be simpler.

Regards

Martin

Re: FC Zurich/Grasshoppers

Ah, football!

Grassophers are the posh team of Zurich and as such, don't have that much support. Zurich are the working-class team and they have much better support, in quantity and quality. This year, because they have to play at the Hardturm, whilst the Letzigrund is being re-done for Euro2008, they have much reduced their "tifo" activity but last season was quite something from them, it very much impressed across continental Europe, with superb displays in the stands.

Football wise, it's not Premiership but it's not Conference either, if you like the game, it's worth going, particularly considering the price you'll have to pay (yep, Switzerland is cheap for football!).

Anyhow,k 22nd of April will be the big one, with Basel-FCZ, if it is just half as spectacular as last year's game, it will be a treat!

Re: FC Zurich/Grasshoppers

Agreed, the 22nd will be the important one. Hopefully, the result will be different and FCB will be champions. Here is hoping anyway.

With Basel and Zurich football teams it is much more to do with the rivalry between the towns and most people in Switzerland outside Zurich love seeing Zurich lose.

Have fun

Martin

Re: FC Zurich/Grasshoppers

If you are talking about Grassophers, I agree, that's why a team like Servette has fans all over the German area, because at a time it was seen as the only close rival to GC and for a bumpkin from Aargau and Uri, "gloryhunt" a Zurcher team was beyond the pale.

But FC Zurich are seen in a more favourable light, I think. They certainly are seen as a decent team amongst my friends and I, unlike Grassophers

Which is true for now but it changes all the time and I know a lot of people who simply support the better one. Unfortunately.

I'm a Grasshopper supporter and I visit every home game. In my point of view GC is the traditional club.

Anyway, no need to buy tickets in advance in Zurich (both teams) ... except big games (FCB, derby).

Re: FC Zurich/Grasshoppers

According to the rugby club's website Grasshoppers began as a rugby club

FCB-FCZ would be great to go to, but I don't know if I'm brave (crazy) enough to wear my FCZ shirt in Basel!

Re: FC Zurich/Grasshoppers

Quite a few football clubs started as rugby clubs actually, Servette Geneva for example started in 1890 as a RU club before switching to football 1900.

I wonder who St-Gallen played against when they started 1879 (first Swiss club)...?

Go casual Daniel

Re: FC Zurich/Grasshoppers

Grasshoppers was founded 1886 by English students. They played their first game against 'Polytechnikum Football Club ETH'.

St.Gallen was indeed the first Swiss club and accordingly to "wikipedia" even the 2nd one in Europe!
