Squash loses out to golf for Olympic 2016 inclusion

Quote:
Former world number one Peter Nicol stated that he believed squash had a "very realistic chance" of being added to the list of Olympic sports for the 2016 Olympic Games, but it ultimately lost out to golf and rugby sevens.
I can't believe the news today, absolutely gutted. Squash players and associations have lobbied for many years for the sport to be accepted into the Olympic Games, to no avail. and to lose out to golf ...

Olympics, is more about money than anything else. Tiger Woods brings in a lot of money and happens to play golf.

If Squash could bring in the same kind of money as golf, I assume it would be in the Olympics as well.

Yep, it's all about spectator interest. There may be a lot of people who play squash, but there aren't many who will pay for tickets to watch it or who want to see it shown on TV. In contrast, golf is a big draw for TV audiences, so I'm not at all surprised by this.

And even that's an overstatement. Since the invention of the golf cart it's not strictly necessary to walk between holes and a lot of golfers would rather pay caddies because they can't be ar$ed to pull their own clubs behind them.

I think Olympics should only include "strength" events and not "skills" ones. Especially scandalous are events where subjective marks are given. It should all be about being the fastest, highest, strongest... not the most twirly, bendy or smiley.

I agree. Or at least it should demand some physical effort. When was the last time you saw a golfer break into a sweat? In my book, a sport isn't one you play in long slacks and a pullover for pete's sake.

It's a shame about squash. I think the Olympics should offer a chance to sports which aren't that commercial. Golf has plenty of coverage and competition possibilities elsewhere.

I agree. Why we have football, and now golf, in the olympics is beyond me. Especially football; it already has its own world cup every 4 years, along with the various other regional cups.

I totally agree. The Olympics is the longest, dullest most overrated sports event in the world.

I reckon I could get it down to about 10 events each for men and women

Track
100m
Swimming
50m freestyle
Field
High Jump, Long Jump, Shot Put
Weightlifting
Over 80kg, under 80kg for men
Over 60kg, under 60kg for women
Rowing
I don't know the technical term but one person rowing in a standard boat provided by the organisers.

Squash is good cardio. Golf is continuation of office meetings through other means.
