Hmm. I grew up In Vancouver, and I never once saw the northern lights... I swear I wasn't too drunk, but perhaps we're taking the “great white north“ thing a bit too far with fabricating a north pole image, yes?

Re: Olympic Vancouver

Oh, yes plenty of places in Canada display the aurora borealis. But, just as nobody has ever gone ice fishing (thank you Beijing-Vancouver preview) in Van, there are no visible northern lights. Sure, represent the native culture, I'm all for it, but don't throw in things thathave nothing to do with the area.

They didn't do this crap with the Montreal or Edmonton olympics, why now?

Re: Olympic Vancouver

Q: How many Calgarians does it take to screw in a light bulb?

A: Twenty-five. One to screw in the bulb and twenty-four to talk about how great the '88 Olympics were.

The one which does the screwing (light bulb) is from Newfoundland of course

Huh? You think they photoshopped it? Seems a weird and pointless exercise (I assume it's a staff photographer for Blick and not press pics from VANOC).

Anyway, I love the Olympics and can't wait till they start. That hockey final is going to be legend.

I am seriously experiencing a little frisson of excitement.

Haha, sorry, that's what I meant! Apparently intensive German school and the gym take more out of me than I thought...

The ice fishing was a display performance by Vancouver at the end of the Beijing olympics. I believe it's used to introduce the next host city.

And yes, in theory, you can see the northern lights from higher altitude in a solar flare, but with the light pollution, greenhouses making the clouds(and passing ducks) glow, well, I've never heard of anyone aside from that guy seeing them.

As for the photoshopping, Vanoc has poured billions into this thing. Notice how everyone's wearing all this thick winter clothes, yet the trees just off the piste are perfectly green? It's way too warm. Right now, it's 6 degrees in van... All the snow outside of whistler was brought in from, I believe manning park by helicopter. Compared to the cost of that, a couple of doctored pics is nothing.

Umm. Seattle's had Northern Lights - even my parents have seen them, and Seattle's a bit south of Vancouver.

Re: Olympic Vancouver

[QUOT]extreme geomagnetic storm...visible as far south as Oklahoma.[/QUOTE]

If there are extreme conditions, you can in theory see them everywhere. As the magnetic poles are dynamic, the outer limits of visibility are too. The poles are expected to vary more dramatically over the next decade or so, and then I guess the lights could even be visible in mexico.

And being south on a map actually has nothing to do with it. it's the direct distance to the magnetic pole. The conditions of the upper atmosphere and the intensity of the radiation determine the range. If anything, due to the higher population of the east coast, they should see them farther south than the west coast.

But, it's still embellished marketing that follows the theme of representing northern tribes that never lived anywhere near the Vancouver region.

Re: Olympic Vancouver

Ok, so apparently, they're running simulated northern lights for "atmosphere", which also explains why the lights appear to be on the clouds in that pic.

I talked to a friend that is working the games, so I don't have a link...

You do realize there are Northern lights in CANADA, and the Opening Ceremonies are supposed to present the COUNTRY, not just the host city?
