Hi all,
Not sure this thread is in the right place....
Was just wondering if there are any EF members going to the SWC 2010 in South Africa in June?
If there any EF members going are you worried about safety issues at all?
Just curious |

I know in South Africa we call it Soccer.
Or was the booo 'cause you don't like the sport?

I know absolutely nothing about the game or the rules all I know is that the SA team is really really bad.
You are right about the rugby, the Bokke are the best! |

Re. soccer vs football, it's quite easy to remember: "Football" is the ball game played with the feet.
In Australia, paradoxically, we refer to all of the following games played more with the hands than the feet as "football" or "footie": - rugby union
- rugby league
- Aussie rules
and the following game, played almost exclusively with the feet, as "soccer": |

So the origianl question remain, is anyone you know going???

Spoke to someone from SA before leaving the UK this week. She seriously suggested not going. Civil war is right around the corner again, security is either threadbare or not experienced enough to cope and to top things off, if the USA make the quarters Obama is apparently coming over sparking more massive security issues.
As much as I'd love to go, I'll be giving it a miss this time round.

Soccer is soccer. Football is what we play in Canada http://www.cfl.ca and lease to the lower 49 to have their fun too http://www.nfl.com
Australian rules football is also good fun to watch and play, but their balls are bigger, allegedly.
Back to the thread; do I want to get carjacked in South Africa on my way to watch a game of soccer where a high scoring game has maybe 3 goals? Er, no thank you. But the CFL kicks off July 01.

I'll be there during the world cup and though not for it, I am looking forward to the vibe. I do hope Bafana Bafana get through to the next round. Will be great for the local supporters. Don't think the civil unrest is as definite as previous post suggests - the normal folks really want it to succeed.

Just came back from two weeks stay in RSA and from organizational point of view, it has been stunning, plenty of security and fantastic customer service everywhere. Got my passport renewed witin a week, and waiters served food 5-10 minutes max after taking your order. Lots of positive vibes and lets hope that the WC2010 is only beginning to make a change. Btw, Gautrain already runs from Sandton city to the Thambo Int. Safety doesn't seem to be an issue at the moment.
