The 2010 Wimbledon thread

A bit early, before Paris, but I just read something that fits perfectly here: First official poet at Wimbledon:
Quote:
Matt Harvey, the first "Championships Poet", will write a poem each day on "all things Wimbledon" to capture a flavour of the Grand Slam tournament.
And here is a link to The Poetry Trust: Wimbledon announces first Championships Poet:
Quote:
All Matt’s poems will be viewable online and there’ll be audio podcasts - featuring Matt reading his latest verses and sharing behind-the-scene observations - via the Wimbledon and Poetry Trust websites. Enjoy the first podcast now as Matt explores Wimbledon, shares his excitement and reads his ‘Grandest of Slams’ poem for the first time.

Hooray! First day of Wimbledon.

A day which, when I lived in Wimbledon, I used to dread. Now I'm far away, I can fully enjoy.

Who's your money on this year?

Well, it's not likely to be the boy Fed judging by his shocker of a first game (unless he's just lulling us all into a false sense of security?)

I've had to turn the volume down. I don't want the neighbours thinking I'm watching cheap porn.

John Isner and Nicolas Mahut play in the longest match in Grand Slam history at Wimbledon, with the match suspended at 59-59 in the fifth set after 10 hours.

It is RI-DIC-U-LOUS... Seriously. It was painful to watch, but I couldn't turn it off. I might have to take a "long lunch" tomorrow to watch the end of it. Craziness at Wimbledon this year (including the, *gasp*, slight of hand of putting Federer on Court 1 instead of Center Court ).

Re: The 2010 Wimbledon thread

We (CD and I) were trying to work out what 35 and 36 meant next to the guys names before it dawned on us. I think we eventually left for Querfeld when it was about 43 each.

59-59 is pretty awesome, and it's a pity one of them has to lose tomorrow.

Re: The 2010 Wimbledon thread

Fantastic demonstration of stamina and endurance from both players. I wonder who their physio trainers are ???

Having said that I aslo warm up to Djoker's suggestion of playing the tie-break when results hits 60-60.

I do not think that even the final between e.g Fedex and whomever is gonna get there this year, is gonna top up this

Do you think this is going to be another one of those ambush marketing stunts? I mean, they could contrive this couldn't they... for attention. Sorry to be cynical

Exactly my sentiments. That's what I thought yesterday and given the English team's dismal performance in the WC2010 from previous match (but later corrected by advancing to the knockout stage , they had to pull a stunt. Afterall, it is the American player vs French player and I can understand none of the sides wants to give up. Any cynism quite understood.

Re: The 2010 Wimbledon thread

I see where quite a few men's matches at Wimbledon this year are having very long 5th sets. Says here that some kind of rule will be introduced (sooner rather than later) to end matches sooner. And God forbids if it rains with matches going this long.

If a match gets to 6-6 in the fifth set, I think it's a pretty safe assumption that the players are evenly matched so let's do a tie-break and make it easier on the players, television, the fans, etc.

John McEnroe was saying that both John Isner and Nicolas Mahut will be TOAST for at least a month.

It's not like they were playing for the title... just the right to face Thiemo de Bakker in the second round.

The king has been deposed....

The Swiss, playing his 25th consecutive grand slam quarter-final, was beaten 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 by big-hitting 12th-seed Tomas Berdych.
