World Cup: Reasons to support other teams?

Hi:
Just wondering...
When your home-country team is not playing in the match you're watching, do you have some reasons to support other team? Like relation to relatives, because you like the way the play, because they always lose, because they always win, because you like that country, because you have a former gf/bf from there, because is near to your home country, etc...?

- Any team playing against France, I'm Irish so it is natural....
- Any team playing against England, same reason as for France
- Switzerland, cause I've been here so long & family are Swiss

Jim.

Positive support (in order of preference):
- England
- The British Isles countries: Both Irelands, Wales and Scotland (well not in this WC)
- Switzerland
- Teams that play nice football: Holland, most African countries, Mexico (this year), most Asian countries, etc...

Negative support meaning I support the opposition (in order of dislike):
- Italy because they are very arrogant (and play boring football)
- France because they are arrogant (although this year they haven't been as arrogant as usual, maybe because of the way they qualified)
- Germany because of the traditional rivalry with England (although admittedly their footballing record is much better )

With this method I seem to have a preference in pretty much every game making the WC more interesting IMHO.

I know the English think so, but we in Germany really do not have a rivalry with England. We do not really care about England at all, sorry. Holland is the one to beat.

Yes I know about the rivalry with Holland but I still think that a lot of people in England would be happy to see Germany lose.

Re: WM: Reasons for support other team?

I like to see a country who has never won or who hasn't won in a long time, doing well, so, after Switzerland, I support the underdog.

Nice answers...
Interesting to hear positive/negative support for the "big" ones, like Germany, France, Italy...

Re: WM: Reasons for support other team?

Another question what happen if you are living in Switzerland, and your conutry team beat the Swiis team?
I'm wondering because I'm Spanish and probably on Wednesday we will win. And normally my boss ask me "what happen" when Nadal beats Federer!

Re: WM: Reasons for support other team?

So in some kind of order (not just for WM)-

1- Don't truly deeply support anyone apart from myself and my wife. Ya! rly

2- My wife's country (her country of birth) cause I love her long time LOL Btw my wife does not give two shits about the country she was born in (only one shit).

3a)-The country I am citizen of even though I was not born there (I discovered myself as a person there).

3b)- The country I was born in. I give one shit only but not two

4) Switzerland cause we both live here......long time.

Are you confused?

Re: WM: Reasons for support other team?

My order of precedence would be:

England
Greece
Albania
Scotland, Wales, NI, Ireland
Switzerland
USA
Portugal
Any other Balkan country (except Croatia) + Turkey, Israel, Iran
Germany

If either of the following play, then I will support the other team:

France
Argentina

If they play each other, of course, I hope they both lose.

Am I expected to give reasons for all of these, or is it enough to merely explain that I am riddled with prejudice and irrational favouritism?

Re: WM: Reasons for support other team?

1. Portugal (and certainly not because of Cristiano R as I can't stand his face, although his bod is quite OK) - it has been underperforming for the longest time.

2. The Netherlands - full of promise but also hasn't achieved much recently. Robben and Schneijder (and Van de Saar) are excellent players. Also irrationally drawn to all the "van" names such as Van Persie (and his Tin-tin hair) and Van der Vaart (peeet!).

3. South Korea - spirited and quick. Would like to see North Korea play too - any good? Never seen them play before. (Won't cheer so much for Japan 'coz WWII wounds run deep in the then-Malaya.)

4. I'd cheer for any African country that makes it into the second round and beyond.

5. Slovenia - for the heck of it, and they'll top Group C after beating Algeria this afternoon (after last night's nonsense).

6. And Slovakia - 'coz I confused it with Slovenia this morning. ;-)
