Power Snooker - Good or bad ?

Never heard of it before, but being an avid snooker player I can understand what Ronnie is trying to do to lift the game out of the doldrums...

If anyone is interested in having a crack at the new rules at Pot Bellies, give me a shout.

http://powersnooker.com/

THE RULES OF THE TRADITIONAL GAME OF SNOOKER APPLY, SUBJECT TO THE FOLLOWING VARIATIONS:

Nine reds are racked in a diamond, with the point of the diamond next to the pink.

The middle red is the PowerBall, once potted, this triggers a two minute PowerPlay during which every ball potted counts double – if a shot is missed during a PowerPlay, the clock stops and the player’s opponent inherits the remaining time.

Each game lasts half an hour; the clock starts when the reds are broken, and stops as the final black of each frame is potted.

A shot clock limits players to twenty seconds for each shot.

If the twenty second shot clock is exceeded, there is a 20 point penalty and the player still has to take the shot.

Points count, frames don’t. The most points scored after half an hour wins.

When a player breaks, two or more reds must hit a cushion otherwise the player’s turn ends.

The area behind the baulk line is the PowerZone – if the cue ball is struck from within the PowerZone, any colour potted counts for double and during a PowerPlay, quadruple.

A century break in any frame is worth 50 bonus points. If this is repeated in the next frame, 100 bonus points. If this is repeated in the third frame, 200 bonus points.

The “ball in hand” principle applies following a foul shot. The cue ball can be positioned anywhere in the PowerZone.

The game will end after the half hour playing period and the player with the most points wins.

Re: Power Snooker - Good or bad ?

"Power Snooker has been created by Rod Gunner, who together with Ed Simons, have developed this new phenomenon. Power Snooker has received the official blessing of Barry Hearn’s World Snooker and will form part of the World Snooker calendar of events."

I feel that Snooker needs a shot in the arm to continue to bring a large audience to the game as well as sponsors etc.
The first event is at the O2 soon.

I look forward to watching.

Also, as an avid fan of both watching and playing, I'm up for a session at the Pot Bellied one.

Re: Power Snooker - Good or bad ?

Yep Kevlegs, this has to be more exciting, although keeping up with the scoring and practicing keeping scoring etc will take some time I think. No doubt the TV commentary will bend to this issue. Can't wait for the first televised match. It's going to shake the game , hopefully not divide it. I reckon the Asian players will take to it quicker, fewer old school eyebrows to raise at the clubs.

I have fired off an email to Pot Bellys , maybe get the resident Pro to walk through the rules and scoring.

Re: Power Snooker - Good or bad ?

Like the rules, love the power ladies, not too sure about the roudy countdowns on the other tables... Some refinement needed, it was a bit of a pub or club atmosphere and it seemed there were a few disinterested players...it's an offshoot, not an evolution of the current game.

Re: Power Snooker - Good or bad ?

I didnt see the earlier matches but I agree, it's a refreshing alternative to the main tour schedule.

I wonder if the rowdy tables are ringers to enhance the atmosphere

It will never make it into the clubs... you need a ref and timekeeper, and a bloody big slide score :-)

Mikaela should lead the power girls out...

Watched a bit of Power Snooker this evening, didn't like it. Reminded me of cheap American billiards instead of the classic gentlemen's sport that snooker is.

Isn't that the purpose of the new game ? To escape from the gentleman constraints and bring it to a wider audience ?

Re: Power Snooker - Good or bad ?

The scoring and timing format was an interesting change. I liked it for being fun to watch, although it certainly cannot replace a traditional match.

Unfortunately, the drunk, loud, singing fans were extremely annoying - it would have been better without them.
