Visitor Messages - how to avoid

I received a visitor message through email and would like to answer it but I don't want to give out my email address in anyway.

Question 1:
How can I answer without giving away my email address? By using the visitor message answering box, it specifically states my email address will be forwarded.

Question 2:
How can I avoid getting visitor messages in the future? I don't mind private messages but feel visitor messages is the wrong medium for me. I don't want to give away my email address without my consent.

Go to your Edit Options here.

Turn On / Off the desired settings.

It is worth repeating that if Visitor Messages is enabled, all of the messages are visible to everyone who looks at the profile. I think this is still the default setting.

Is it possible to have 'not enabled' as the default. This would mean that members had to set their profile to receive them, rather than the reverse.

What is the point of visitor messages anyway?

There is the forums for discussion, and there are PMs for private stuff.
I don't quite see how visitor messages would have a meaningful use not already covered with those two, or with reputation...?

Completely agree, but this is part of the Facebookisation of vBulletin.

On another vBulletin board that I frequent there is heavy traffic in visitor messages.
