How to thank/groan at other users?

Hello, I suspect it will sound silly, but i cannot figure out how these functions work - to thank or to groan at other users. I looked all over the screen and tried almost all buttons, couldn't find it!

one week membership and 10 posts will get you it. Plus you cannot thank/groan posts over two weeks old. And tit-for-tat groaning games will be spoiled.

You don't get this facility until you've make a certain number of posts, I think 10.

Thanks for info. Now, why did you groan at me, is that a part of new user introduction as well?

no not really, I'll tidy up the thanks and groans on here later.

you deserved the subway ones though

Now you need to stop posting in areas of the forum like this where post count does not increase

Okay, seeing there are no user friendly signs to go with, I been spending my time searching this Forum for info on what a Reputation is, how to get or not get it ...and ended up here ..... Yes I know this is an ancient posting from 20.8.07 ..... but I see Mr Lob Rockster mentions that if I search the FAQ I will find an overview and a mention of the elusive Reputation Story.

Well, I did, and there is no mention of any reputations.

If this goes on much longer, having to search in the dark, then, I just give up. Obviously this is a very independent site and has no usage for ordinary people. I am now thoroughly pissed off. Someone takes the time to respond to what I post, only to take a shot at me ... with no intimation that they have the foggiest notion that this person is simply asking for some guidance here. On other Forums, members steer one in a direction, at least.

I am sorry that I am coming across as negative/judgemental/whatever... but this confusion I have is the reason why I have not been contributing here since I joined, and now, having some free time, imagined I could find my way in. Obviously I thought wrong. Sorry folks for taking up your valuable time.

There is some info in the following posts:

reputation rating

Reputation?

Since the Thanks & Groans were introduced I don't think reputaion has been given so much.

Sorry you're having a problem figuring out the forum. However, there are literally thousands of people on this forum who miraculously managed to figure out how to use it without insulting the current forum members and administrators.

Don't expect anybody to take the time to hold your hand and help you out when all you've seemed to do in your limited number of posts is insult the forum and the people on it.

Thank you for taking the time to enlighten me, I realy appreciate it. I apologise. You all seemed to take my plea for assistance as a personal insult, when none was ever intended.

Hi smoky

The reputation is given by clicking on the little scales icon to the top left of the message window, you can give reputation (i.e a little green square) or you can select to disagree with a post and give them negative rep which results in little red squares - as Lou mentioned now that the thanks / groan buttons are in use people are not using reputation as much - Maybe because you had received some bad reputation and therefore had some red rep marks that was why you couldn't get back into the arcade??? i'm not sure on this, its just a guess but thought I'd try and help you out as it seems you've still not had your question answered

Hopefully this helps you out

Nicky

Thank you SO much Nicky for taking your time to respond to me. I have done some more research on the site, and slowly the system is making sense to me. I was most puzzled about being emailed and invited to respond to the Arcade game, and then finding it blocked because I had a certain "rating". Obviously I had pissed someone off by inadvertantly posting on a retired thread. Thanks again.

I have the same problem, but intermittent. Yesterday I could, today not. Is that 10 posts in a specified period?

No. it's 10 posts in total. But you can't thank/groan older posts. So, if the post didn't have the option, it's probably because it's too old.

Re: How to thank/groan at other users?

I have a question... or more a debate about the thanks and groans function. Recently I have observed what could be best described as a groan barrage in certain threads. Originally it was against one member, but then I saw a groan against someone else for what appears to me to be no reason. Now this is a public forum, we are all entitled to our opinions, some of our opinions may differ from other peoples this is normal... ...but is it in the spirit of the forum to simply groan someone because you disagree a little with what they say?

I had a look through a few profiles, and in general people seem to give a lot more thanks then groans, does it say anything about someone who has groaned much more then thanked? Or has groaned someone for every 2 posts they have made in the forum?

I don't want to name names, but surely the idea of the forum is to be a positive help to other English speakers here in Switzerland, not to alienate someone because you have a disagreement with them about a particular subject. After all if we all agreed it would be a boring place!!!

Just thought it could make for an interesting discussion! (No groans allowed )
