Preview post and quoting seem to be fine now, but today something else has appeared. I've got a 1 message notice at the top of the page, but when I click on it there's no message. Last one I had was from 3Wishes a few days ago. I can't get rid of the notice. There was no e-mail notification about a private message either.
Click on your user name to view your profile. It's either a visitor message or more likely ( as I had one too) an invitation to join a group.

Yes, it's the gardening group invite, thanks Belgianmum. Still showing as I haven't accepted or declined yet, but at least I know what it's about.

First job is to get rid of all the weeds that have come up again before I can even think of what to put in their place.

Re: Anyone have preview post problems?

I'm still having problems with this sometimes. I go to preview the post and the actual text doesn't appear in the posting box for editing; I have to copy the preview and paste it in again.

Having problems with editing. I sent a very long and detailed reply to places to visit before leaving Switzerland. 2 seconds after posting, I realised I'd forgotten to mention Gruyres and clicked in edit and added this- and the whole post disappeared!!! Grrr
Manual Quote because the automatic quote does not work in this case.

Yes, it is the same for me a lot of times (but not always).
If it happens when you are previewing a post, you should be able to use the 'back' button on your browser to get back to the original 'Edit' window.

Worse is when you have submitted a post and suddenly realise you need to edit it, but the 'edit' function simply returns an empty window. If you are lucky, you can, by using the browser's back button, find your post in an 'Edit' window and re-submit it and (if necessary, delete the out of date post). If not. Too bad.

These problems started to be noticed after a recent English Forum software 'upgrade' (in the last 3 weeks or so) and have not been fully resolved.

Re: Anyone have preview post problems?

I have done a few tests, which appear to yield the following information.

If a post contains only the following characters, it can be quoted, edited or previewed without problems:

abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
ABCDEFGHIJKLMONQRSTUVWXYZ
0123456789
+"*%&/()=?`@#|${}[]<>\^!-,;.:

If, however, it contains any of the following characters, you not be able to quote it, edit it, or preview it:

禬䣧

Edit and message disappears

Hello,

I wrote a long message today on "Is it the beginning of the end for Geneva" and simply wanted to edit a grammar mistake. I pressed "Edit", reason for editing: I wrote the correct syntax, then my whole message disappeared!

I know it's my fault, but I would like to know what I have pressed wrongly, as this is the second time it's happened to me. Thanks for your technical help!

Touch and hold any word, choose 'Select all', then 'Copy' ..... and then Edit - there are gremlins in that-there machine, yer know?

It may also, be because your newly created thread has just disappeared into the ether and somehow tagged onto the tail-end of someone else's.

You didn't do anything wrong. I've merged you into the big thread so you know what's going on. Seems the system is a bit buggy, and sometimes edit/quote/preview works...other times not.

Admins know and are working on it, and it seems to have improved, but the bug is still there.

Thanks for all your work and input in correcting the bug.

It's been a few days since I've been able to edit any of my posts. Frustrating, yes, but I'm happy to know it's not only me!

Keep in mind the Edit button is only visible for a few hours after you make a post. If you don't see the button, that's not a bug - that's normal. If you click Edit or Quote and get a blank box instead of one full of text, that's part of the bug.

I have further noticed that an iPad (Safari Browser) does not appear to be affected in the same way as Windows and Android devices.
On Windows, both Internet Explorer and Firefox appear to be affected. On Android, I tried only with Firefox. On the affected devices, posts which contain at least one of the following special (8bit) characters give problems:

Yes I'm aware thanks. Exactly as explained above, it was part of the bug I suppose.

I've just been able to edit this post!

And I've also been able to edit another post of mine which contained photos.

Normal service resumes (for me).

Thanks again everyone.

Re: Anyone have preview/edit/quote post problems?

As a workaround, you can mark and copy the post you want to change, click the edit button, then paste it into the empty edit window and apply the changes.

However, you can't copy quotes that way, you'll have to insert them manually.

Indeed. Chrome (which I've just installed for this test) works for me as well on a windows 7 PC when I quote a post containing the special characters. The same PC, incidentally, on which neither Internet Explorer nor Firefox succeed.

Quote, Code, Youtube & Wiki not working for me.

The 'wrap tags around' icons for the above mentioned functions are no longer working for me.

I must inform you that I've bought a new laptop. Do I have to change some settings on the new Lenovo to be able to use these functions again?

I also seem to have too many spaces between each line that I write... Please advise how I can reduce that.

Thanks

Can you describe "not working" in a bit more detail? You don't see the buttons? They don't work when you click them?...
