Merging posts...

I know I have raised this before... but I'll give it another try:

I might be the last living user of the tree view of forums, but could the OPs please stop merging posts (unless a noob gets completely out of control)? I know they look like two consecutive posts to you, but by merging them do you mess up the entire structure for people who don't just read threads from the beginning to the end...

Example: Starting a business in Switzerland.

Most of us made it out of the trees years ago and have been scampering around, happily on the grass plains.
Personally, I can now mostly move around errectus on by my back legs and no longer need to drag my knuckles along the ground.

As a long time Usenet poster, I sympathise, but have to confess astonishment that you're managing to use the threaded view on EF. I tried for ages, but ultimately gave up, as it's really no good once it gets more than a few levels deep as it doesn't show the whole structure.

And not only are merged posts likely to upset your view, but also the fact that many posters don't even think about making their reply specific to a previous post, and using the generic 'post reply' button seems to embed the post at the maximum level, such that it's not possible to see it in the tree structure anyway. Or have you found a way to get the threaded view to show all levels, instead of the annoying "more replies below current depth" message?

In general the mods aim to reduce the number of posts, so quite often will merge together several separate replies which makes reading much easier (for anyone not using the threaded view) so it's most often going to be us, not the OPs, who are causing your problems.

I think you probably are the last person who uses tree view

Merging posts is pretty pointless anyway, but I guess it gives the mods with OCD something to do, even if it is making things worse, not better.

I think it happens automatically to some extent due to the quote feature putting the post in the right sub-tree (this reply for example). But yes, I'm also surprised there is enough structure to make it worthwhile. I guess removing the top-level reply button would help.

EDIT: now I've created precisely the kind of two consecutive posts on different sub-tree situation that could be incorrectly merged!

How does tree-view work with multi-quote?
