Indeed- and the search function is pretty useless anyhow. Newbies will quite naturally ask questions that others have asked before- so no need to bite their head off, surely. And also, just because a topic has been discussed before, doesn't mean it is not longer topical with new issues/facts coming into play.

Hannah's Auntie- perfect! But where on earth is this, Not on the tool bar, not in 'Home' or 'directory', 'community' or 'Control panel' - so how do you get to this section? (be nice please, I was born way before mobile phones or computers- although my big bro was in the fist batch of Doctorate in IT at Grenoble University, in 1965 or 6! He is the clever clogs and soon 79).
Agree completely about some of the treatment of newbies.

I don't think 'xtra' is anywhere visible. It is just one of those things that some people know, though it isn't a secret or supposed to be restricted as far as I am aware ;-)

Anyone new posting any kind of useful question gets told, rudely, to search the 'bloody forum'.

Some 'forum legends' liken this place to a pub where you can come for a bit of banter.

I would liken it to some pub in the middle of nowhere in the U.K. where, as a stranger, you walk in and everyone stops talking and stares at you.
I'd liken it to a stranger walking into a pub, standing at the bar and asking the barman for a "pint of the usual"
"I'm sorry - you're new here, I don't know what your usual is"
"All the pubs where I am from do"
The barman then list the 4 lagers, 6 real ales, stout and 3 ciders they have - and also directs the stranger the fridge of beers
The stranger then says.
"I'll have a pint of lager."
"Is that Stella, Fosters, Peroni, Staropramen, Artisan"
"Lager"
"Yes, but which one?"
"Why all the questions?? I'll just have a JD and coke if it is too difficult for you."

The stranger receives their drink.
"Do you have any complimentary nuts?"
"We don't do complimentary nuts"
"All the pubs from where I am from do complimentary nuts"
"We don't, but we do sell crisps <lists crisps>, nuts, olives and pork scratchings"
"Pork scratchings? Who eats that crap it is ghastly" shouts the stranger
"It is our biggest seller" says the barman pointing at a group of locals all sipping their pints while munching porks scratchings and looking at the stranger.
"OK, a packet of crisps then!"
"Which flavour?"
"Why all the questions? This place is so unfriendly!!"
"Which flavour of crisps would you like?"
"I'll have the lasagna and chips. I see it is beef, can you make it vegetarian? And can you swap the chips for a salad? Preferably with rocket, tomato and mozzarella in it with a balsamic vinegarette"
"I'm sorry our kitchen is closed at this time. The chef will be in shortly and can prepare you something then. Alternatively I could rustle up a cheese sandwich for you."
"The pubs where I'm from have kitchens open all day!!"
"I'm sorry about that - here have a packet of crisps on the house"
"That's very good you. Now we're friends would you like to buy my car?"

It's not a new thing.

When I first joined, there were only 36 other members and it felt like a bit of a closed club then too. If anything it was more inimidating than it is today, as there were fewer sub-cliques to fit in with.

Falling numbers? I think a lot of traffic has moved to even cliquier Facebook groups and dedicated Spiderman Instagram groups (don't think the higher number reflected any sort of quality).

Add it to your favourites. Most browsers will autocomplete for you if you just type xtra into the box at the top anyway.

Failing that, you could just remember it. It's only four letters.

That's nothing.

When i joined there were only 6 members.

They included Zwingli, Heidi, Willhelm Tell, Lenin and Wolly.

And as the Internets hadn't been invented yet we had to shout things from the tops of church towers. The bells would ring to tell us we had exceeded our posting limits and the search function was just us trying to remember everything.

These young whippersnappers how no idea how good they have it. Search function? Ha.

The way I remember it is by using the "Low Fat Forum" link in Quickies menu. It'll take you to a non-existing/error page, but you can delete the "lite/" from the address bar to get to the xtra menu

Re: Caught out by Post Count

Oh I see, hugely helpful, thanks

Surely, it is available without this palaver somewhere on EF! If it is not, why not- if it is, where? If it is only accessible to mods- then don't link it - oder?

As said, the only time I've seen those figures is when I got that famous message- usually after typing a long and complicated reply about the education system, etc- which is then lost (I suppose I should copy and paste it somewhere and then retrieve, if I could be asked!). Too late by then.

PS, so just tried 'Low Fat Forum' (how daft is that?!?) and get 'access denied on this server'. Why is this info not available to all, please? Ridiculous that you can access this by clicking on a link in someone else's post- but not directly?

I always get the message on hitting reply. If the forum gracefully allows me to post I can normally finish my post.

What palaver? It's just four more letters on the end of the usual englishforum.ch address.

In what way is that difficult or inaccessible?

All the four letter words I know are rude. I can never remember the others.

Given that the post count restrictions have now been removed it's fairly irrelevant now anyway as you can post as much as you like, unless you just want to look at the stats I guess.

What's the point of posting rubbish if you don't run into the limits.

The EF ain't what it used to be.

I must admit to being quite impressed that the administrator has actually responded so quickly and positively to our complaints.

Nice going!
