Caught out by Post Count

I searched the forum but couldn't find a Thread started by anyone who has EXACTLY the same problem as I have.

We have workers here in our flat. Muck and mess everywhere. No good cleaning till they have finished. Mr.L. is away. I need cheering up. What better place than the EF family to calm my shattered nerves.

Log in. Read a bit. Laugh. Write a couple of helpful posts. Make a few kind suggestions. Annoy a couple of members. Throw a few 'Thanks' in where justified. Have a giggle from time to time, Write another helpful post or two. Look up a few links for new members. Do a bit of welcoming. Annoy a couple more members. Correct someone's English. Want to give a tip about permits and am 'forced' to write two consecutive posts as the 'edit' feature doesn't work so I'm unable to add my brilliant after-thoughts to the first post. Make a joke or two. Couple more thanks. Write a PM thanking someone for helping. Correct someone else in slightly superior manner as befits my age. Ask a question or two. Give someone a tip,...
Then.
Out of the Blue
A Thunderbolt.
*You cannot post any more.
You have overstepped your posting limit for the present week.

What? Overstepped? Too many? How can one be too helpful? Or be helpful too often? (we'll ignore the not-so-nice posts which help to add to the dread total). So now I am reduced to one post before supper. And if I am lucky, another before I go to bed at midnight.
Ah the shame of it. Temporarily banned.

Ah well. I trust that the work will soon be finished in the flat and I can amuse myself with other toys.

*Wording inaccurate. Cannot check, as if I write another post to 'pull the plug' on myself, I cannot start this thread.

Re: Caught out by Post Count

The bar gets lower month on month as posting on EF decreases.

It made sense a few years ago when EF was an enormous creamy trifle, but these days, when it isn't much more than a ginger snap, it just gets in the way.

DB is obviously suffering the same fate, as his usual number of meaningless crap is being capped and keeping averages low.

Dear Mr Longbyt,

You have obviously found a solution for your wife's EF addiction.
Would it be possible for you to build something similar for Facebook?

This has been discussed in the past. It seems to kick in more often when there are less people posting e.g. Around Christmas.

Perhaps the averages have dropped off again

IMHO, I think that posting average drops around the summer time when folks enjoy outdoor lifestyle and it picks up again during the cold seasons. However, the Xmas time is family time and many people go on holidays. Hence the stats could differ around then.

Having said that, it could be "good bye my friends from posting the crap" for me ... I'm hitting the stats this very moment

That isn't actually the case, probably because in summer people tend to take holidays at different times. At Christmas/New Year people are obviously preoccupied with family etc. or not logging in at work

The posting this year is only about half the level it was three years ago. That accounts for a lot of it. This week is lower than Christmas/New Year, 2012/13

Sorry for beeing a "noob" but what is "down rep'ing".
Press/click on the 'scales of justice' in top right corner of each post to find out - although your personal post count may mean that it's invisible to you, and if it's not, you wont be able to rep. anyway.

Hope that makes everything crystal clear.

Re: Caught out by Post Count

Back to the Thread Topic.
Shut out again after starting this thread, I checked that text. It says
Weekly post quota of 2% exceeded. Click to see posting averages.

Although my feelings on being locked out were amusement as well as slight frustration, I think, sooner or later, this is going to be a real problem on EF. I know that originally even Moderators could also be caught in the trap. Whether that is still the case or not I don't know.
The folk dangerously high on the 2% limit list at the moment are
1st - 72 - 2.01% - lorena1 -
2nd - 70 - 1.95% - Longbyt -
3rd - 63 - 1.76% - Dougal's Breakfast -
4th - 62 - 1.73% - MusicChick -
5th - 59 - 1.65% - Belgianmum -
6th - 58 - 1.62% - Wollishofener -
7th - 57 - 1.59% - marton -
8th - 53 - 1.48% - Today only -
9th - 52 - 1.45% - dodgyken -
10th - 52 - 1.45% - jacek -
11th - 51 - 1.42% - Phos -
12th - 49 - 1.37% - Mullhollander -

EFers who write amusing or provocative posts keep their fans coming back for more. Those EFers who do a lot of digging for links, searching for information, giving helpful tips generally probably enjoy reading those bits too. They keep the Forum alive. And perhaps some of them, like me, have a warped sense of humour themselves which they cannot use in Real LIfe and relish the chance to give as good as they get on here.
If admin isn't careful, these very folk, and also those who attempt to keep things on the straight and narrow, will not be able to post when they try to.
If prolific 'fun/provocative' posters hit their limits (and of course, those who would rise to the bait, find no bait to rise to and don't post either) the total number of posts will drop dramatically. How long can we expect someone like Medea for example to keep trying to post relevant details for a Newbie when she hits 2% over and over again?

There's a tipping point in there somewhere and I think we are slowly reaching it.

PS. This post together with a measly 'just for fun' one, and I get told "
Weekly post quota of 2% exceeded. Click to see posting averages."
If, as in my case, one writes many posts on just one or two days, you're going to have to wait until those days drop off the week's total before you have a hope of being in the clear. Ah well, I'll go and finish reading the daily paper.

Re: Caught out by Post Count

It is very annoying when it happens. I've been caught out by it a couple of times recently.
What's most annoying is that it only happens when one has something vitally important that one really really must post. It never happens when one has nothing worthwhile to say.

Only posted now because I know I am going out for most of the day so won't need to post any more today.

If Spam Deputies and Mods didn't delete as many fluffy posts and for sale posts, the overall post count would be higher. This would give more leeway for the post limit

If there were a similar limit for "groans" -> "You have exceeded more than 10% of groans given over a x hour period" then that would seriously curtail the EF activities of certain members....

Spam deputies cannot delete fluff or for sale posts (otherwise there would be less fluff I assure you. This particular spam deputy would have a field day, especially at the moment when she can't post much). Actually, I'm not sure whether Market Place Posts count anyway.

My limit's up for another couple of hours again I guess.
