Complaints of bullying on marketplace posts.

Hi to all,

I would like to update that the car has been sold, and therefore the post is no longer relevant.

However, now that it is done, I would also like to complain about what I feel are "forum bullies". I actually expected to sell the car through the EF, as other colleagues of mine have had previous success, and since, as I replied above, I feel it is/was a "win-win" situation, I hoped this would be the case. I wished to sell my car at a higher price than a dealer would pay, and I know that other expats would be ecstatic to buy a car at substantially lower than the dealer would sell, from someone who is or has been in a similar situation as them, speaks English, and gives some degree of feeling of trust (unlike that received from car dealers). Unfortunately, it was through other means that I sold the car (either anibis or autoscout24, who I had to pay 59 CHF to advertise through). I had many inquiries through these sites and only a single one through EF, after the car was basically sold.

I feel that the reason for this is the "smart-ass" replies in the post, which were unhelpful to me and made a fellow EFer miss out on a great opportunity.

Yes, we all know that buying and selling things is a tough game. Not all of us are sales experts with the iron balls needed for such deals. In fact, probably those that are do not use EF for selling, as they can make their profits at the expense of other anonymous people. Therefore, when someone offers something at what they believe is the right price, it is completely counter-productive to boast how you (a slick veteran) could get a much better price and how the seller should slash his/her prices. What this does is makes another EFer - a potential buyer - believe that he/she could find such a price that probably does exist somewhere in the world of slick veterans, but probably not in the world of naive rookies (who are probably those who need a car). The result is (as in my case) that the car is sold outside this forum to someone who knows how to play the game and is not in need of such forums. The previous potential buyer will most likely end up paying at least the original price and probably quite a bit more to some garage or dealer. So thanks to the slick veterans who are at home counting their millions of posts (many of which are disgustingly mocking people trying to sell their really good merchandise for a really fair price) and feeling good about themselves, the people who are actually in need of this forum just hit a huge lose-lose.

I will inform you that I was able to sell the car for much higher than the dealers offered and a bit lower than the very negotiable price I posted. I would have also lowered the price, but following the counter-productive replies, I understood that on this forum, no one would buy the car unless I put it for 4k CHF, which I did not intend to do.

Veteran EFers - think about the intentions and goals of this forum before winning a few points for being a smart-alec.

Keep enjoying Switzerland,
Dasi

Why don't you tell us how much you got, clearly not much more than 4K or you would have mentioned the fact. Instead you lectured us like school children, are you by any chance a teacher?

Re: Great family car (peugeot 308 SW) for sale

I have to be honest that i also do NOT understand EF sometimes!!!

I totally agree with the OP on this one! you "senior" forum members are really rough sometimes (to say the least) and can be hugely discouraging for newer members to post anything... i don't care if the car was WAY over valued or valued just right... i have seen too many of these down right rude replies from the senior members and i for one think its un called for!

Perhaps the oh so mighty mods can moderate forum bullying and stop being so vigilant in deleting posts that are deemed as "fluff"??? i will personally count how many smart replies i get just from this post and similarly count how NONE of the smart replies will be moderated...

So you agree with me, if you are ON the site, you're not normal, therefore my original assessment of you not only stands but is confirmed by you

Both of you need to understand that advertising things on here is a privilege, not a right, and is intended for the benefit of existing members, not simply for the convenience of the seller in a captive marketplace. It's a source of tension from time to time, sure, but please remember that this is a discussion forum, not ebay, so it's perfectly reasonable for existing forum members to discuss the contents of adverts.

Similarly when new members, or ones who've been around for a while but never posted, blatantly post on a dozen news threads from over a year ago, it's obvious that this is someone who has no interest in joining in with the group, but is solely concerned with their own advertising. Why should the newbie be granted free rein to post any old stuff at potentially inflated prices while the membership isn't allowed to comment on it?

EDIT: I've now moved these posts to a new thread to allow further thoughts to be aired if there are any.

Well, probably more to do with the fact that those two are specialist sales sites, with people who turn up especially to buy cars. That's why it cost you 59 CHF; exactly like EF, it was worth every penny you paid.

Why don't we babysit advertisers? Unless there is actual abuse, rather than somebody talking about prices, then personally, I don't care. That 59 CHF buys you silence too.

Re: Complaints of bullying on marketplace posts.

Well, discussing the price is not really bullying, and this is indeed a public forum so everyone is allowed to express their opinions.

Now, it is also true that there are smartasses around, who really don't care about the topic, they just wanna mock (aka Troll).

Re: Complaints of bullying on marketplace posts.

I certainly agree that sellers can expect some discussion about details of their items, especially if they have unreasonable prices. As mentioned, that is one of the perils of a free site that was set up primarily for discussion.

It doesn't mean that people have to make rude or bullying remarks. If there are any, in sales or elsewhere, use the 'report post' red triangle to alert the mods. Hopefully, they would take the appropriate action.

Is this the thread you're talking about?

If so, I don't know what you're complaining about. In fact, a bit more gratitude to those who gave you support and helpful advice might rather be in order.

Well to be fair you have been post one line shit answers to random topics... A sure way to spot someone building a post count before the sole purpose of trying to sell something.

So the "fluff" I agree with.

The contextomy fallacy, very popular on these forums.

Indeed, although it tends to be the newcomers who complain about bullying who are the ones lacking context. This forum has been rough and gobby for a decade now. It isn't going to change to suit the sensibilities of people who just popped in for a swift half ten minutes ago.

@Doug's Microcephaly: No, because he deliberately left out context to promote his "joke", and he pandered to the old members(smart), well for starters the quotes he took weren't in the same post, and second the guy insulted in "self defense".
