'Whitelist' [unable to post after using "safe" browsing add-ons]

Well I've only made a couple of posts and fear I'm going to end up on a 'Blacklist' as a moaning - minnie.

Anyways; I use Netblockade and Network Spy Alert and when they are switched on I can not get into the site ( nor register incidentally, otherwise I would have registered ages ago!) and you get some message about 'Admin having to add my domain to his whitelist' ....

Fascinated to know how he's going to do that ??? !!

Shame about the feature as I enjoy keeping riff-raff off my computer and my personal information, but it looks as if I want to be 'active' here then I'm going to have to be less-guarded ( and how un-Swiss is that ?!!)

Re: 'Whitelist'

Are you sure it doesn't mean that you, the administrator of your PC add this domain englishforum.ch to the your whitelist?

Re: 'Whitelist'

You could well be right!

This is the message that I receive FROM this forum:

"In order to accept POST request originating from this domain, the admin must add this domain to the whitelist."

I do however have to say that the settings enable me to go to any url/site that I enter .... and is the first time that this has happened to me though , so it has to be a 'feature' of this site....somehow !

Re: 'Whitelist'

Well this site does drop cookies, so just allow it all the friendly access it needs to your military setup.

Re: 'Whitelist'

I think what the system (our system) is saying to you is something like "If you've got all this extra crap turned on in your browser which is stopping us from tracking where you are in the forum, then we can't accept any contributions from you".

Which is fair enough if you ask me.

Answer: disable all that crap, at least when you use this site (i.e. *you* whitelist *us*) and the problem will go away.

In short - you've nothing to fear from us.

EME,

If you are serioulsy worried about internet security try running a few of the online tests at http://www.grc.com/ in particular 'Sheilds Up'.

A bit of a geeky site, but well respected. Using a physical firewall I can pass the first 1056 ports test.

I'm always amused by the people who run a router at home running network address translation. This hides their IP address from the internet, yet they sometimes go and buy another firewall, and many run a firewall on the PC, even when they are behind the router or an extra firewall.

Running more firewalls does not equate to safety - informing oneself about what the dangers are how to best avoid them is a much better idea that spending money on software that usually does nothing more than slowing your machine down and preventing you from doing useful work on the internet.

I think a false sense of security is far worse than no security.

Don't get me wrong - I think Shields Up is a great site - if only to demonstrate to everyone that they are STILL hidden, even when they've disabled all that crap (and the windows firewall), due to the fact that their router is effectively functioning as a firewall anyway.

Yes, my router is my firewall, my home my castle and so on...

You would only need a firewall in a PC if you have a direct connection to the internet. What happens is that if you are using M$ products (windoze/outlook/IE) you need an antivirus/antispyware and normally they are bundled into a package that includes a firewall.
