Discussion about how to search effectively (the guide)

This thread is the official discussion thread for the official forum guide on how to search effectively.

The guide itself is a closed thread, but this thread is for people to discuss aspects of the guide, or to ask any specific questions about some more difficult searches that they may have attempted.

If you need help with any of the concepts raised in the guide, this is the thread to post those questions.

While I'm happy to receive praise for writing the guide, I'd prefer this thread to focus on people's search issues, rather than clog it up with "Thanks for writing the guide" or "Thank you" posts. Therefore, if you'd like to show your appreciation for the guide, or if it has helped you find what you need, please just consider pressing the "Thanks" button. Donations towards forum running costs also gratefully received.

Anyway, please post your search relations questions. I can't always guarantee that I'll have time to answer them personally, but I'm sure others can help too.

Very nice guide :-)

I didn't find in the guide though a way to search for words that have the +/- operators. In my case when a search for "Digital+" (Digital Plus, a Satellite provider from Spain), the search engine assumes 'search with the word Digital' hence, I don't get the results I asked for.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

good question; even using + from this transpose table does not work.

For now you'd be forgiven if you started a new thread.

You got me there. I spent about 20 minutes googling, but no luck. In theory, this is a mysql full text search, so the syntax should be the same. Theoretically single quotes should force special characters to be treated literally, but it appears as though those single quotes may be stripped off before the search terms get to mysql.

Sorry!
