Spelling: Useful tools for your browser

www.iespell.com - ieSpell; works only with Internet Explorer (but you knew that, right? )
http://spellbound.sourceforge.net - Spellbound extension for Firefox. The Weasel gets something too

I've used ieSpell before and it's OK. Of course you're welcome to test either one or suggest your own - and post back if you find either useful.

IE7 has a built in spell check too. Haven't looked at it yet since I am a FF adict so have no idea how good it is.

indeed - but portableapps means that you can, for example, load FF, openoffice, GIMP, VLC and other nice things onto your Sony Micro Vault and use it in the office

Re: Spelling: Useful tools for your browser

I seem to have picked up a Google page translator in IE7. It will translate German pages to English and this page to English too...

Re: Spelling: Useful tools for your browser

Just installed Firefox 2.0. My web developers toolbar still worked and which I click the right mouse button a spell checker pops up. Sweet.

So I went to check the dictionaries, lest I be forced with misspell words like colour (argghh! the word colour is now coming up with a red underline due to the spell checker) only to discover:

English | English (en-AU)
English (British) | English (British)
English | English

Interesting. So by simply saying "English" they don't mean the English that the English speak, but the Americans (I'm guessing). I thought that was called English (US) (en-US).

Anyway, for those of us who prefer not to misspell words like colour - be sure to download the appropriate dictionary after you install Firefox 2.0.

Re: Spelling: Useful tools for your browser

There's a lot of talk on the m.s.firefox newsgroup saying essentially that ver2 was rushed out to steal the thunder form IE7 and there are plenty of issues to be resolved.

And of course IE7 doesn't need any help it steals its own thunder. Test your IE7 security here:

Actually, you should be able to set your preferred language from Tools, Options, Advanced

Those are page display languages, nothing to do with the spell checker. If you use British English you'll still have to separately download the dictionary and change the settings, or it will default to US-English.

Wouldn't it be nice if the software just looked at my Windows installation, saw that it was configured for British English and downloaded the appropriate dictionary and set the default for me, rather than just assuming that US English will be fine for everyone. Sigh

oops...so true! I just assumed they would somehow coordinate the spell checker with the language display setting.... Perhaps they should include a 'read checker' or an 'assumption checker'....
