| If you click search, you'll see you can search these new tags (if you have a browser with JS running). | |

Since more and more parts of the forum are using javascript, if anyone is blocking it they will certainly end up with a "reduced" forum experience.

| Just one quick question: How do I narrow my search by searching for a combination of multiple different tags? | |
| | |
It seems that this isn't possible, since when you click on a tag, you get only messages matching that tag. We are currently asking the people who did the tag software about that point. Bear in mind that tags are done by humans, often quite poorly. Basing a search on two or more tags might produce very little or no results.

| 1. There is obviously some pretty good tagging going on already to ensure that Google for example put the threads high up the ranking. What tags are used by default, and do the user-added tags take priority ? | |
| | |
Well it's not really correct to say that there is "tagging" done by google. Google just looks at a page of text to try and figure out what is important. We help google in various ways to try and position the various elements in a way that is google friendly. Tagging is just one of these tools (and the fact that tags are exported to zoints.com).
The biggest SEO (search engine optimisation) factor is thread titles - these appear in bold close to the top of the page, and they keywords from the title are inserted directly into the URL itself. The mods are constantly changing thread titles to not only make them more friendly for busy people who don't want to see "please help" or "question" in the list of new messages, but also because this is the single biggest factor in generating inbound traffic.

| 2. Am I correct in thinking that only the creator of the thread can add any user-added tags ? Will the moderators add any themselves if the discussion takes a completely different direction, even if they stop short of renaming the thread itself ? | |

That was actually addressed in the guide Dave

but your assumptions are basically correct. I've asked the mods to add or change tags where they see them missing or appropriate, but have no way to track if this is actually happening. I've been doing it myself though. I've also linked the tag guide directly under the box where tags are entered on new threads, but so far tags seem to be ignored by people creating new threads. I can make them mandatory, but have been afraid this would create too much confusion and result in tags which match the subject line (i.e. not a list of words, but an entire sentence) - this has also happened.
I've written some extensions to the original system that allow me to specify individual users who can have rights to add or delete tags across the entire forum. If you think tags are a great idea and would like to have this ability to help increase the number of tags across the forum, just send me a PM.
I think its one of those things, with time more and more people will notice them and eventually get used to using them. Unfortunately however many new threads are started by new users who may not have this awareness (or click the link for the guide).
