Re: Is the EF community similar to the community on that movie THE BEACH?

Nope not an English lesson, but given your gum bumping and a masters... one could hope for a little more.

Maybe someone from Dover will bite the bullet and be your friend as your seem to be getting a grilling, unless he finds out your a bit of a lemon, whose half baked ideas make them appear half baked

Goose, it's a masters in English. They don't even bother printing you out a certificate. It's just a thumbs-up-and-a-don't-let-the-door-hit-you-on-the-way-out type degree.

Let's not forget people here really do know eachother. Not just drink together and that's why they stick together, we are not so desperate here. But friends, stories, relationships, shared experiences. You may sneer about clique, but friendship is friendship, online or offline. Normal.
True. And inevitable actually.
But believe it or not, I have gone so far to groan some of my friends, can quickly think about 4 guys from my 'clique' that I have groaned at, and their reaction was... wait... there wasn't any reaction! Like they didn't care! WTF! OMG! LOL

For eight months I have been following this forum, and this is what I have seen....
- If you need information about relocating to Switzerland search related threads - it may take time but you will get the info you need from first hand experience. When I say time for key info, I mean up to 5 hrs plus depending on what amount of reinforcement you need for certain subjects.
- Don't ask if your salary offer is good enough, take the time to dig around in threads for a sense of this...otherwise some members will slate you very quickly (depending on which day and how you ask the question).
- If you have a real problem, you will get genuine help from some good people but don't take advantage with another problem.
- Some Senior + members do jump on Newbee's from time to time to show the pecking order of the forum, and they are more likely to be direct and rude in this instance.... but have support from the moderator and other members which leaves you on your own basically. This is because they have been out to drinks together before and you haven't.
- There are a couple of amazing philanthropic moderators here who have the community in mind....on the other hand some should not have been given this responsibility because they bend to peer pressure or let it go to their heads and the consequences when they are in residence are obviously negative, and /or the forum is neglected and can get out of hand.
- There are what the regulars call Trolls and they can be really funny. They sign on as a new members and make more entertaining threads which are simulated real life. Lots and lots of people jump on the bandwagon and enjoy it, making it a very popular thread.... then the OP in question gets worse and worse marks like at high school, then banned and called dramatic by a bunch of included regular members. And then sometimes discussed in a psychological way by the EF incrowd in a seperate thread of their own.
- Two or Three members here say some dreadful things to new people now and again just because they feel that side out.... if you are a Newbee don't expect support as aspiring members and (certain) moderators protect the hierarchy because they have been out to drinks with them before.
- This group loves witt and if you have that they will forgive alot...sometimes more than whats fair and to the exclusion of other good people.
- There are a handful of incredibly intelligent and philanthropic members here - they stand out like a sore thumb and inspire many Newbees to stay.
- Talking on the EF forum is one thing BUT will you join the social group they dangle the carrot for? Its more exclusive than you think and compromises must be made (unless you are a clear match).

Re: Is the EF community similar to the community on that movie THE BEACH?

Well, I am also a newbee and my English is for sure even worse (me being a not-native English speaker who only learned it at an adult age..).

But I also have an observation or 2.

Amberleigh15 (in short: Amber) started off good, with some good observations. Although I would have expected fireworks, the forum community actually responded quite sensible. Apparently too sensible cause Amber started to respond harshly and started to groan at a lot of people. To get the discussion going?

Later on suddenly Amber aimed at Shorrick (are those your own eyes by the way? Cool..) and I also got the feeling that it was actually Shorrick she had issues with iso the EF in general. No idea if that is the truth but I just got that feeling. And I must admit I start to be very curious about the dodgyness of those emails..

(edit: maybe I am totally missing the point and this whole thread is actually Amber trying to get a date with Shorrick?)

I have read the whole thread and frankly there was only one thing bugging me: why. What is the reason behind the opening of this thread. I myself find the EF as any other forum (and real life alike). Actually better then that cause Newbees actually get a lot of space and attention from the so-called veterans. And yes when you obviously do not even try to find the answer yourself.... If it is a personal one re Shorrick, why does Amber try to get the community against her (is it her?). Which by the way not really worked.

I notice I am wondering off... Just saying that I find the EF very helpful, and the veterans usually quite amusing, also when I do not agree with them. Tongue in cheek and some cynical humor, keep m coming! And for those who cannot handle it or do not like it. Use the groan button, the ignore button or whatever...

My 2 cents...

I don't have a beef anymore, I hope thats Ok with everyone?
I've decided not to piss off from the forum either further to my previous scornful statements, it wasn't an easy thread...its been a journey.

However, its my right to change my mind, to stay here if I choose. If you are upset about it...get a moderator to PM me.

There is always the Baking in Switzerland thread available and you are not obliged to contribute further if you see no point.

Sorry if I'm a little late to the party, but I think that really the key question that needs to be addressed is:

What exactly is your present position?

My overactive, sleep-deprived mind is conjuring up too many possibilities and not all of them pleasant. Please put my mind at rest.

Thank you.
