Lots of music CD's to get rid of

I'm going through my large collection of CDs and putting them all to MP3 then I'll be chucking the CDs.

Question is does anyone know a good place to take these rather than just throw them out, there are several hundred and it just seems such a waste to throw them away, I wondered if there was a good second hand CD store anyone can recommend I take them to? Or if anyone would like a large box of CDs (too many to list each artist) give me a shout

Nicky

Hi,

if you end up giving them away for free I might be interested. Though, have you thought of eBay?

Cheers

Re: Lots of music CD's to get rid of

My plan is to bin them or give them away for free, there are several hundred CDs it is not worth my time to list each one on ebay to get a few rappen per CD and then there's posting each of them..... a lot of time and effort for not much return

anyway I have had a few enquiries already, If there are any left over I'll give you a shout

Nicky

Re: Lots of music CD's to get rid of

Personally, I would never get rid of my cd's after ripping them as I would much rather have the physical product than only a stream of bytes sitting on my harddrive. But if I did, and there were lots of cds, I would probably make two backups on two separate hard disks or other backup medium and keep one unused and in a separate location in case of hard drive failure... just a thought.

Re: Lots of music CD's to get rid of

to be honest I have not bought a CD in years, probably 5 years ago since I last bought an actual CD, right around the time I got my first iPod! the CD's that mean a lot to me I am keeping, the ones I know I'll unlikely listen to again but nice to keep a copy of I am ripping and getting rid - taking up far too much space in my small cellar compartment - its all about minimalist living here - no hoarding just essentials - that's what i keep repeating to myself anyway - aiming for a clutter free life

But you are now making me question this and I keep going back to the 'BIN' pile of CD's and am syphoning some off back to the 'KEEP' file...... bugger

Re: Lots of music CD's to get rid of

It might be a bit far away, but in Biel we got a shop called 'speedy cash'

http://www.speedycash.ch/german.html#p1

where you could bring them and ask say 2 francs or even only 50p per cd,the shop then sells them on usually for 2 to 5 francs depending on the quality.
I have bought several 'old' cd's and even vinyls there as well as x-box games for my Bratz, and so far never had a bad experience.

If you have any 60's folk sound and 70's glam rock and the like, i might also be interested to buy some of you.

Zero Zero in Kreis 4 buys CD's Records etc. 300 CDs has got to be worth something! I couldn't find a website but they are listed in this "other forum" thread about Zurich record stores.

Be careful with that. I have all of my CD's ripped to hard drive too, along with two offline backups.

A week ago my hard drive died, but having two backups made within the last 6 weeks I thought I would be in the clear. Sadly it turns out that my data has been slowly corrupting itself over, well at least the last 6 weeks, and I had no way of knowing as everything seemed fine.

Its fairly inevitable that you'll lose some data at some point, so I'd keep the CD's personally, then you can re-rip if something goes wrong. Just throw out the cases if you're desperate to save space - and stick the CD's on an empty CDR spindle or two. My two cents......

don't forget that, when you no longer own the CDs, your ripped CD collection effectively becomes illegal

Re: Lots of music CD's to get rid of

I made the same thing just before moving from Geneva to Zürich last year.

I ripped everything on MP3 and then boxed the near 500 cds I had, went to the places where used CDs are sold ( in Geneva there are 3 big places, I don't knowin Zürich ).

They bought me maybe 2/3 of them, they were very picky with the CDs though, even if they were paying very little for CD, they wanted the CDs in perfect shape and of good reselleable material.

I ended giving away the rest of the CDs but made me some money back on the process, enough to buy 2 external drives to backup the media data.

Re: Lots of music CD's to get rid of

Right I have had a lot of interest, I have conveyed the warning about losing the data to hubby who has been in charge of archiving and de-cluttering, he is still adamant that we should de-clutter and get rid, I still feel slightly sick at the thought of losing my CD collection but I have kept back the ones that mean a lot to me.

Anyway the CD's have now been claimed, some lucky person will be receiving my 1990's memories - minus the really good memories

So how does this work then Lob for MP3's bought online, you don't have an actual CD for these but they are legal?

you've paid for them and a transaction exists to prove that. And usually, they are DRM-ed to your device(s).

Your CD collection is the evidence that you own a copy of the material. Fair use really does not exist in many countries so the fact that we all breach copyright by ripping our CDs is tolerated.

There is a lot of information hidden in your MP3 files
