| | | Want my [UK] Rover 214 car for free? [no longer an option, car has been scrapped]
I have a car that I drove to Zurich from the UK a few days ago. I was planning to scrap it but if anyone wants it they can have it. Roadtrip?
Its a 1995 Rover 214. It's in full working order, but would cost more than its worth to get the UK MOT again. Its current MOT runs out on Friday, 27th of November so act quickly!

Yeah, I know! Maybe I should drive it back to england and scrap it myself. Might end up being cheaper.

What mechanical work would be required to get a UK MOT ?

I had it check over before I left the UK, to make sure it was safe for the trip. It wasn't an official MOT check but, from memory:
1.) One of the tires has tread that is *close* to the limit. It might pass.
2.) The windscreen cleaner jets don't work, but I'm not even sure if thats neccessary for an MOT.
3.) He warned me to take it easy on the brakes, as they are a bit soft, but I think that was just a safety tip so it might not be an MOT issue.
4.) There is a dent in the front where it went into a ditch. Again, I don't think its an MOT issue.
I can't guarantee anything, of course, but I don't think it would take too much to get it past MOT.

3. is also an mot failure
4. shouldn't be unless the bodywork is touching somthing or is a danger to anyone, eg sticking out

i need a car for a one-off "job", so the issues you mention don't concern me. where/when i can pick this up? perhaps you can just leave it at a designated place with the keys on top of the right front tyre? PM me details.

The guy at the garage thought it was a Honda at first. THat car made the round trip Oxford-fribourg without a hitch.
Street credibility indeed |

As long as you book an MOT at a garage on the day you enter the UK and have insurance, your ferry ticket, you should be OK if stopped by the police in the UK.

not this again, no your not ok!! the car isn't legal in the uk, so its not legal anywhere else, sure with the mot booked in the uk and insurance your legal to get it to the mot testing garage, but driving it across europe isn't legal! if your involved in a crash then you'll be in massive amounts of poo, and your insurance company won't want to know.
on one of the other thread I posted the links to the uk gov site about mot's and driving abroad, basically your car has to have a valid mot all the time its abroad.

I scrapped my UK car here last year, and did not have to pay for it. I even got CHF 100 cash for it. I do not remember the name of the company, but i think i found their advertising in 20 minutes or one of the other free newspapers.

I guess it depends on the car, I scrapped a very old uk nissan sunny here and was charged 150chf, but it was a real wrecker, used it in a banger rally and my co driver couldn't be bother to drive it back to the uk lol

The cooling system broke on the way to CH, and as I had the car for 2.5 years already, and it only cost £350, I was happy to get rid of it without having to pay for it. I had to stop every 10 km from Belgium to Zürich, and let the car cool down before I could fill more water on it. Took 18 hours to get here

We could name the most annoying EF member to drive it...
I'll sponsor the team with wine and could christen the car with a bottle a champagne to start the damage off.... | |
