those are more or less all general Android questions.

VoipStunt & Skype should get along fine, but using both in the background will have a massive impact on the battery life.

There's a whole range of apps that will allow you to open and modify MS office documents. Thinkfree Office, Quickoffice and Documents To Go spring to mind.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1: Thinner & Lighter than iPad 2

This looks to be the most impressive Android tablet for the summer. I'm glad I waited and passed on the Xoom. These Sammy tablets look damn sexy.

Apparently, they won't be coming to Europe, though. Samsung is releasing the unmodified first version (now called Tab 10.1V, because it will be exclusive to Vodafone in the beginning. Swisscom will also get a SIM-locked version of the 10.1V in late April). The slim version is US-only for now. Except for the 3mm thinner case for the US version, the 10.1V is better in a few respects: comes with pure Honeycomb (no touchwiz - the US version will have touchwiz) and has an 8 megapixel camera.

The Xoom was extensively compared to the iPad 2 over at phonedog.com and got a very favorable recommendation. I've never heard phonedog recommend anything over an Apple product, but this time, they did. That said - I'm also happy that I didn't go with the Xoom - because it costs more than the Samsung and doesn't come with a Swiss warranty (only imported versions will be sold here). The Samsung 10.1V, that can already be ordered from Digitec, btw., is a generic Honeycomb device and will be more or less exactly the same as the Xoom.

Has anyone used a rooted Nook to edit or create word documents?

Yeah spec wise, the older 10.1 is probably a little better, but for me it's all about portability, so I love the newer design. I'll be having some relatives visit during the summer - hopefully it's released by then.

The new design is very attractive - however, the changes are so minimal that you definitely won't notice a difference when it's in your bag.

Anyway, if you get a chance to get a US version: Samsung said it should be released in June

Re: Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1: Thinner & Lighter than iPad 2

I got chatting to one of the Galaxy Tab team on a plane when I spotted he had one before it had been released. I had a good play with it on the flight and he was happy to answer questions about it. I liked it having an SD card, being usable as a phone (imagine that? a 3g device you can make phone calls on) and having a full size sim. I wasn't so keen on it not using a micro USB connector, non standard charging ports are one of my per peeves but the thing that really gave me pause though was that he said the bootloader was locked like the Motorola Milestone. Having been a victim of Motorolas customer 'service' (for 'service' read 'contempt') and knowing that the locked bootleader all but puts an end to clever geeks cooking up their own roms to get round manufacturer deficiencies. I would be very wary about buying the tab.

Mind you I don't really *get* tabs I just fancied a new toy.

i've had the galaxy tab for a while now and must say i've been surprised by how much i use it. the size is great as it fits in my coat pocket, so i take it with me when i travel.

the larger screen makes it better for browsing, email, calendaring and todo (my main uses).

main gripes are:

- 380g is still too heavy, would be nice to cut this by half to make it more comfortable.
- screen is not wide enough, but i don't want the device to be physically wider, so need some way to have edge to edge screen
- mic and speaker placement is not very well placed for making calls (and i've been caught on the hop a few times and had to receive calls on this!)
- non-standard charging port (means i have to buy/carry extra cables)
- keep hitting the power/vol buttons. would be good to have these recessed.

nice to haves:

- nice if it was thinner
- replace rfs with better filesystem, though fast enough that i haven't converted it yet

surprises:

- the extra sdcard slot is not needed if you don't use it for a media player, the on-board 16g is more than enough
- i hate the touchwiz interface, but the touchwiz apps aren't so bad (although the overall style is horrible)

i'd definitely buy a version 2 in the same form-factor if they made the screen wider and the device lighter/thinner.

The Barnes and Noble Nook color will soon have the software.
So a Nook doesn't have a phone or 3G, but it's half the price of a tablet.

I think that a Nook will work in Switzerland

Re: Samsung Galaxy Tab

Last week, I have installed several updates, including 1 from the Galaxy Tab itself. After that, the music player could not recognize the files or was not able to support it (had to download several music players until I found one who worked).

Worse than that, the phone/message app seems to be all jammed up. SMS get lost, it doesn't give notification for voice message, the music player starts when I hang the phone.

Has anyone else had the same problems? If so, could they be fixed and how? And, for bonus point, could anyone talk to Samsung tech support?

Thank you in advance for an answer,

Desperate in Zurich
