Earth Hour 2011

Earth Hour: March 26, 8:30 PM

This Saturday, at exactly 8:30 pm, cities, towns and landmarks across the world will go dark for 60 minutes to mark Earth Hour 2011 — a global event sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF). Homes, offices and government buildings will turn off their lights for one hour to show support and commitment to climate awareness and protection.

Oh dear. I don't like the dark.

I guess I'll have to make my own light...

Re: Earth Hour 2011

8:30PM on which Time Zone?

On the link provided, is a countdown clock, which at 9:00AM today (i.e. time of posting) CH time (GMT+1), gives: 1 day, 8 hrs. and 45 mins, resulting in a time of 17.45 tomorrow (Sat.)

Now there's a recipe for confusion.

Meanwhile, to highlight the plight of the malnourished children of the world, I shall be standing on a chair for an hour.

I'll awareness the lot of you if it's the last thing I do!

Unless the electricity providers are switching off supplies, I frankly doubt it.

Luckily my watch and most clocks in our house are automatic, so they will change themselves.

This weekend see the opening F1 GP which is at the crack of dawn so this will add to the pain of getting up for this.
I have problems to see how you make your WWF climate awareness compatible with F1 GP given its nature.

Re: Earth Hour 2011

Again? Didn't they try this before? Does anyone feel any more "aware" than they did this time last year?

Edit: Actually I am more aware than I was last year that an awful lot of people are making an awful lot of money through "carbon trading"

My aunt and uncle made their fortune by carbon trading.

They were coal merchants.

Re: Earth Hour 2011

Good to know that I'll have done my part to save the Earth once this hour is over.

The misery endured will be quickly followed by a sirloin steak sourced from Amazonian cattle herds, genetically modified mashed potatoes and pesticide-ridden broccoli.

So I can't do my bit for the environment and watch F1? So if I stop watching F1 it will disapear and the world will be a better place?

F1 engines are actually more efficient than most road cars. Also the sport has become more green over time and will continue to do so, but I hope not at the expense of the sport.

There are MANY things which could be considered non-environmental including drinking bottled water:

well that's what's behind the main idea: act as if everyone was doing like you and see if it has positive or negative consequence. So if you shift your attention from F1 to solar car racing, it will get more attention and it will bring more money to build cars using renewable energy instead of oil or bio-fuel.

If 8.30 pm on Saturday is just not possible for you, an alternative time would be 2.00 am to 3.00 am

Once a year, for sixty minutes?

If saving the world is as easy as that, I might even join in!

I think the general thrust to the argument here is that you're not doing your bit for the environment, by following some ill-thought out event (Earth day, not F1...), you're just making a sop for your conscience.

If you really want to do something for the environment, following the principle of act locally, think globally, how about tidying up and neatly disposing those cigarette butts left at tram and bus stops?
