which way: rolling close to the wall, or hanging away from the wall?
I understand your initial issue with the toilet paper and I must say, that I traditionally prefer option "b"...but since I discovered some alternative methods, I simply don't care anymore.

Re: toilet roll direction

The B position has the advantage that you do not touch off the wall as you tear off the required amount. The means the paint or wallpaper remain pristine years longer. The idea that you need help from the wall to rip the paper is weak I find - the paper is perforated?!

Re: toilet roll direction

In Taiwan, they don't use rolls but individual sheets (like tissues, but arranged flat in an open-topped box). I found this much easier as you just grab one as necessary; no need to spin things around, tear off a number of sheets etc.

Everywhere else in the world I've been has rolls. Except India, where I was meant to squat and then somehow use a hose without (a) slipping around and dropping my wallet/keys/phone down the hole or (b) spraying my arse and ricocheting dirty water everywhere. So I used to just hold it until back somewhere with a "Western" toilet.

Oh, and I always use 'B'.

Cool. Another EF post I can simply cut&paste and append to my CV.

B, it's how I was taught. And when I clean, I fold the corners up so it ends in a nice point, like in hotels!
Doesn't the point make the "cleaning" a bit uncomfortable?

Oh that was common in France in the 80ies too, but it was open bottomed box, like the paper sheet to dry your hands in Swiss public places restrooms and train toilets. It almost disappeared. It was always pink, never understood why that colour. Same time in Germany, roll with flower printings were fashion.

Re: toilet roll direction

Thanks all. It seems that most people put the roll in position "B" as God intended, but a few heretics still insist on position "A" - and these are mostly girls. Interesting...

Re: toilet roll direction

My folks taught us to place it in the A position, the reasoning given was that then it's not as easy for little ones and pets to make a mess. (Of course, if they grab the end, there's no stopping them but still...)

Meanwhile, we have something like this in our pad here and if I revert to habit and go with A, it is more of a pain, so here I go with B.

So far as soiled hands touching the wall, that rings a bit silly to me as aren't you going for the paper BEFORE you wipe?

If my hands are *that* messy from whatever else (cooking, gardening, etc), I wash my hands before and after as I don't want to get whatever fun / work "dirt" that is any place extra on me, never mind the wall.

Re: toilet roll direction

Always 'B'! You always seem to find 'A's in bachelor's houses for some reason I believe...
However - in my new flat, the loo roll holder has a huge plastic cover which is horrible so now we don't even use the holder! Just let it stand 'freestyle'....

It has to be B.

Often simple roll holders have a flap which lays over the front of the roll to hold it while one tears the paper off.

Yeah I have a holder that necessitates B, however I actually prefer A in all other circumstances... either that or my 21 vestal eunuchs lightly spritzing my quests with rose/lavender water at each visit, trouble is the local gemeinde has stopped me using them on Sunday due to the noise!
