Yeah but do they include plants we grow in the garden or we find in the nature and drink in a form of tea?
Of course. The pharma companies don't have the patent on all things that heal. Most of them are derived from nature and not everything can be standardised in pill form with current technology. This isn't homeopathy though. Homeopathy is just water.

How can you breathe a sigh of relief that scientific evidence is disregarded? If you think your fighting a corrupt pharmaceutical industry, you seem to be doing it by replacing it with a system that is utterly corrupt to begin with. At least science can keep pharmaceuticals in check, what will keep the other quack industries in check if not analysis of their effects?

I breathe a sigh of relief that alongside the scientists, there will be representatives of anthroposophic medicine and homeopaths in the panel of judges, who MAY come up with fresh ideas about research instead of relying on double blind whatever it's called...

The only possible way you could write that is if you hadn't the faintest idea what you're talking about.

There's something horribly unethical about doctors prescribing homeopathy, they must know it's not doing anything, yet they're prepared to sell it anyway. Like a medical version of the useless insurance shops try to sell you on electrical goods when the warranty already covers any problems.
Strangely, doctors who are also trained in homeopathy are usually convinced themselves about the it's effectiveness. So there's really nothing unethical about it at all.

Re: The medical advantages of homeopathy

So many modern drugs originate in the wild, Digitalis (heart) from foxgloves, aspirin from willow, St Johns wart for depression, Taxus (yew) for cancer, feverfew for migraine. Even aconite, the most poisonous plant in Europe is used in some medicines. Absinthe/artemisia is of course wormwood and was used as a cure for worms and a flea/bug repellent. Verbena, sage and rosemary all have calming effects. Arnica helps with bruises. Etc- most of them grow in the wild, but I have all of them growing here (Exept yew- we had a huge hedge of yew in our UK garden, and sent several bags of prunings every year to a research laboratory producing anti-cancer drugs).
Plants defo have medical uses. And of course there are all the essences- like Bach flowers, used in many alternative health therapies.

That might be closer to the truth. I read a report that Boots chemist in the UK started upping it's stocks of homeopathic products not because the company believed in it but because they were missing out on a very profitable market segment.

See, back home this is called Homeopathy. So it is obviously a misinformation going around....

Don't you have the distinction of "Herbal medicine" and homeopathic medicine? That's two different categories in the UK.

No, general population call it Homeopathie (in french). I honestly didn't know it was some very dilluted stuff that is suppose to heal from using what you miss to bla bla bla (I googled it... )

Re: The medical advantages of homeopathy

Basically explaining that phytotherapy (plant therapy) is generally very well accepted in scientific and medical circles, whereas homeopathy, due to the extreme dilution of active compounds, is not.

Re: The medical advantages of homeopathy

Thanks Odile,

I got that. What I am saying is the name itself. People ''back home'' used Homeopathy name wrongly.

If you ask them if they believe in Homeopathy, they will tell you a strong yes. But if you ask about phytotherapy, they will look at you with more of a blank face.

Let say, Homeopathy word is over used in an area it doesn't belong to.

Re: The medical advantages of homeopathy

My Russian in-laws swear by this stuff. Apparently it cures and prevents many things. It is one of the top ten selling drugs in France.

However, in a 1997 article,

"Robert Park, a University of Maryland physicist, figures the odds of a consumer actually getting even a single molecule of duck heart or liver in Oscillococcinum are less than those of getting hit by an asteroid."

OK, good start "Homeopathic drug makers don't deny any of this. "Strength is a nonissue in homeopathic medicine," says Boiron spokeswoman Gina Casey. "Just because we can't detect the molecular activity doesn't mean it doesn't work."

Gina works for the company that makes the *cough* drug.

"Everyone's a critic. But homeopathic drug makers don't seem especially eager to fund any large-scale studies to gauge their products' effectiveness. "Some of our products have been used successfully for so long that an academic study would be of little use and could only be used by our critics," says Jay Borneman, a spokesman for the American Homeopathic Pharmaceutical Association."

Could ONLY be used by our critics? What an interesting perspective!

Time magazine advice- the number one thing that you should stop spending money on is homeopahic 'flu remedies.

By the way I was joking about looking for a homeopathic rabies remedy for my cat. I would never play around with rabies, I made that mistake in giving my son homeopathic remedy for measles and he caught measles. Measles can cause blindness and even death.

Yeah I guess that is very plausible in this case with the uniquely 'undefined' IBS. As an severe IBS sufferer, I will begin to eat sugar pills if someone can tell me they're studying me for science, perhaps I can also get some postive results :P
