I completed it although I speak Canadian English, I just checked off American English.

Leave it to EF to get in a debate over some poor soul's thesis. People, do not try to claim the Queen's English if you are from the Americas. Likewise, people from the former British protectorates, do not try to rap.

Do you call the bathroom the loo? You speak British English. Do you call it the john when you are at home with your feet up? You speak American English. Likewise with the boot/trunk. Ditto if you order a pint or a draft. Ditto if you think innit is a word versus ain't. How many times are we going to "round" or "around" this block?

Anyway, I completed your survey and I understood every question.

Hesitated with the question 'where do you come from?' (write the country where you live) - for many of us on the Forum the 2 will be very different.

Also found the concept of 'slang in formal communication' a bit strange, as for me they are totally separate. Bonne chance.

I think it's important to note there's a difference between "slang" and "vernacular". Since working here in CH I have even changed my vernacular for formal communications so that it is more British than American.
