I remember this one night in Toronto and we were at this Motel on Lakeshore Blvd. ...and it was somewhere around -25C. We had a small keg and a couple of bottles of Canadias finest. Now, in the midst of the celebration...Gonzalo left a bottle outside the door in order to properly "chill" it . He went out with nothing but a tshirt on and some shorts. We had this fabulous idea of locking him outside....he almost died. But yeah, moral of the story is, if you're done with a keg and you want to dispose it in a lake. Make sure you do it at night...as kegs tend to float and there was a 150CAD fine for littering in Ontario back in the early 2000.
It is flippin cold out there - was minus 11 at midday.
Also yesterday was the first time in 14 years I've seen our local BLT buses with snowchains on. It did really snow all day yesterday though. I'm a bit disappointed it stopped actually - I love the snow
I'm stuck inside with a stinking cold anyway so just admiring the wintery view at the moment from my nice warm lounge.
so when your Swiss friends say "hey, let's meet for a koffee" and you're thinking, "wtf are you crazy? who wants to go outside in this weather?" how do you politely tell them.... "WTF ARE YOU CRAZY?"
Us non-alpine, non-nordic types are fragile in extreme temperatures.
I have an aversion to spending money on "gear" that will be used maybe 1 out of every 52 weeks per year. Nah. it's easier to stay indoors and gripe about how cold it is. Plus it also means less salt getting tracked back into the house.
I've just cycled to St Louis and back and will be going sledging soon. Yes it's cold but its very sunny.
I have a hoodie, and a woolen hat. Together they keep my head warm. Thick socks and chunky trainers keep my feet warm. One or maybe two pairs of gloves (thick winter ones over my thin cycling ones) keep my hands warm. And my all-weather leather jacket as usual, which I wear all year. It's magic. No special clothes needed. If it's not too windy, and you manage to walk most of the trip in the sun, it's not that cold.

We saw some idiot riding a bicycle yesterday as we were coming back from St. Louis. I looked over at my wife and remarked, "what kind of idiot would be out on a bicycle on a day like today? It's bloody freezing and the ground is covered with snow!"
Just got back from my jog along Lac Léman.
It's the first time I see ice on the lake... I mean within the sheltered marinas.
I wonder when was the last time the whole lake froze.
I've been staying home all toasty warm this weekend. -20 in the mornings hasn't been very motivating. When I do go outside, I keep thinking, "Ah so this is what long underwear would be good for..."
One of my Swiss friends rings me up and says, "hey, me and some mates are meeting down at Barfüserplatz, wanna come?" and I say... "Uh..... NO!!!!" and tell him briefly that it's too cold to do anything and that I prefer to stay inside by the furnace and keep the blood flowing in my toes.
His response to me is:
"You're too lazy; that's not good for your health!"
wtf?
And going out in the freezing cold is better?

Well, it was -20 in the wee small hours this morning when the muttley crew needed their first outing. Ancient Haifisch and wimpy Belltie were content to do the quick skedaddle out and dive back under the duvets... but hardy Hooligan wasn't about to settle for less than her due.
I tried to put her off with a game of garden agility (clutching my mug of steaming hot coffee) and then later a game of frisbee (clutching another mug of hot coffee), but that wasn't enough. So after a few hours of her best 'woe is me' face, which allowed time for the temps to climb to a balmy -13, off we set.
Three hours up and down the Etzel - dear doG, it was cold!
And an hour afterwards, still trying to warm my toes - here comes Hooligan, wondering if it's time for her next walk...
The Vallée de la Brévine, or little Siberia is not very far from me, and they know what cold is. Their record in 1987 is -41.8
Now THAT'S cold!
Coming from Chicago, where we are made of sterner stuff, I should laugh at this cool-ish weather. But I guess I've been here long enough that -13 does indeed seem cold now. Further proof that I'm integrating...
I guess I have not been here long enough yet. Today was lovely and sunny, excellent for a looooong dogwalk. Finally got a chance to wear my real winter clothes, it has been too warm for the last couple of winters here.
And I used to hate winter. But as I know that those temperatures will last for a week or so here, not months, it's actually quite nice. And now sauna - can finally run outside and roll around in the snow, as you do.

Same...I was in Chicago during those -50 to -60 winters, nothing quite like that I've experienced anywhere really
Agreed it is really cold. We have a leaky guttet and as a result have sm some beautiful icicles hanging from the gutter and dangling from the leaves of the bushes underneath.
