| | | When the Swiss have the audacity to bash America
Ok I've just got to say: Why is it the Swiss believe their country is in ANY way comparable to the United States? Americans aren't the only ones who are geographically clueless. When your ENTIRE country can fit into one of our FIFTY ONE states (not even one of our biggest states, mind you), I don't think you can compare our economies, cultures, or the way we are running things. (I'm American, in case you can't tell).
I mean really: Your population? around 7 million. Our population: hundreds of millions. Does your country have any illegal immigration problems, "problem" minorities, etc. Does it deal with things on the ginormous, global scale that we do? No. You are a tiny country that is landlocked by countries that have their own functioning governments and things going for it. You are not called upon urgently by other countries for help, nor are your decisions to act or not act on global affairs discussed in great detail with both criticism (mainly) and praise. Say what you will about the United States, we have our fair share of problems, but we certainly contribute a lot more to the world than Switzerland. I like Switzerland, I just hate when they forget the sheer size of the US compared to their tiny country. Now if they want to compare Switzerland to say, Florida, I guess that would make more sense.
We also have great, amazing selection in restaurants due to our diversity, have damn good shows and movies, and unlike the Swiss, know how to have a good time! Sorry guys, I only like Switzerland. I don't love it. It seems to be very uptight and boring, with it's beauty the only thing going for it. If it were a woman, it would be a gorgeous ice-cold blonde with no emotions.
Rant over
Oops and before any one corrects me, the US has fifty states. I just get confused sometimes when Washington DC somehow gets counted in the number!

Post like that are one good reason, there are many others.
And, being a former American, I do know what I'm talking about!

Well I don't mean to ruffle any feathers! I'm assuming that most people on here aren't Swiss, so I have a safe place to say these things. It's just frustrating being from a country I'm very proud of and feeling like I have to apologize for that! Everyone should be proud of where they came from. And I guess I don't understand this whole "hating of a country". I've never hated any country. I don't even hate Switzerland as a country! I'm more annoyed with the worldwide criticism of America. :/ No country is perfect politically.

Actually the blonde thing is a common misconception. Switzerland is more likely to be a beautiful brunette.

I have no problem with Swaziland and I love living here. Swedes are the nicest people I have met.

Dear OP,
I have a secret for you:
Switzerland bashes any nation that is ever-present in the media. As do other nations. It's like being a soccer/football fan. Your own team is the best.

OP, considering the US-bashing that already goes on here, I'm not sure why you posted this on EF |

Rhode Island, 3'140 sq Km, Switerzerland, 15'940 sq km....down to 49
Population of US, about 312 mio, Switzerland, 7.8 mio so "hundereds of millions may be a sléight over exagerated way of putting it maybe.
I don't think the Swiss do compare themselves to the US, what is there to compare, what do we need to do to become comparable ?

I read that the average American weighs three times the average Swiss person.
Beat that!

I am Swiss and I agree with most of what you write. I too think that many of my compatriots could be a little more modest.
On the other hand I don't know of anyone that would really compare Switzerland to the United States. It's a whole different story, mentality wise and all.
But, considering that we are more than 6000 miles apart, the differences could be much bigger, don't you think?
For some reason you chose to live here and I honestly hope that you will also find out about the positive sides of Switzerland.
Tom
BTW: Thank you America and Americans, for all that you are doing for us ungrateful Europeans.

I think the OP should change the title. For a moment I was quite worried. I couldn't name one single reason why THE Swiss should bash Canada or Mexico or other American countries

CH has about the same population and area as CT, RI, and MA combined.
So, since I'm originally from CT, CH is a much bigger place!
